Not trying to hijack, but we're wrestling with this, now.
New family dog. She's 5 months.
Never had a dog before, and we've not been out camping with her, yet.
I'm afraid our June vacation (not YNP, but Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, etc...) will be too much for her.
She's part of the family, and I hate to leave her behind, but I feel like it would be the safe thing to do.
Our English Setter was 6 months old when, he went on his first cross country RV trip. Is your dog crate trained? Is there someone at home with it all day? If not how long is it at home while you and the family are at work or school? Why do you think leaving it in the trailer once it is use to that as its home would be any different?
You might have to make sure that you have electric if the weather gets too hot in the Southwest by June.
Safe travels!

She is crate trained, so I'm not so concerned about leaving her alone during the day, I'm more worried about her getting loose in the great wide open. She's a good dog, and she's become part of the family 'pack', but she's a wire hair fox terrier, and they have a tendency to hunt and explore. I imagine, she could get herself into trouble pretty quickly.

I have never owned one of the small terrorist breeds, but have owned and trained my owning hunting dogs for over 40 years. In my opinion, no dog should be left off leash under circumstances where it can not be controlled or coralled until it is reliably trained to stop, come and heal. If you are not comfortable with your ability to control the dog by the time you go on vacation than you options might be to never let it off leash unless there is a fenced run or kennel it while you are on vacation. If you kennel it you might consider a kennel that also provides training and will guide you in continuing that training when you return home from vacation.

We haven't had a dog since our eldest was born in 1962 so I'm not too familiar with campground regs in Cal. State Parks, what makes them so horrible? We see dogs in them all the time.

Calif. State Parks don't allow dogs anywhere except the campground.
not on any trails, nor on most fire roads.
nor are they allowed on the beaches except some if they are on a leash. and the rangers will jump on you quick if they're not.
one example is Sycamore Canyon in Pt. Mugu SP.
one end of the canyon is federal and dogs are allowed on the trails and fire roads.
from the state park end, no dogs are allowed on the trails or fire roads.
this occurs in the one canyon and there's no differences in either side.
Oregon SPs allow dogs off leash on the beach and on most of the trails.

Any dog would not last long with a 350# bear. We took ours YS last year and had her on leash all the time. The wildlife sents around site ( Fishing Bridge) drove her crazy. She got real excided when a buffalo walked beside the car.
Happy travels

Sadie is our second dog since we started RVing 15 years ago. It is always tough to go to National Parks and other facilities that do not allow pets on trails, etc. But, having lived right next to Rocky Mtn NP for 8 years and also doing all this traveling we understand the need for the rules.
When planning a trip we make sure we also include places where we can take her on trails - she loves to hike and we call her the Trail Boss.
When in the NP's, etc, she enjoys her naps in the 5er when we hike.
We were in Yellowstone for a week this last fall. We found out later you can take her down to the benches at Old Faithful and actually down the boardwalk some until the see the sign.
Love the NP's and also the OR Coast. Sadie LOVES the Coast beaches.

While driving do you keep your dog in a crate or let it walk around? Harness it?
I'm sure our beagle will enjoy the scents of the wild, so we won't let her off the lease.
We just got a Class A with a plan of future trips and found the floor vents full of hair. I just picked up some sheet magnet from a craft store to use as an easily removable cap for the vents. What are your thoughts on this and what do you use?
