OK, sounds like I better take my dear freind, I know he will do fine in Oregon and I told my wife I really wanted to take him because I know he would love to run on the beach and chase the waves, He is an Oklahoma dog and this will be his first time seeing the ocean, can't wait to get pictures. Thanks for all your thoughts and tips.

We had smaller dogs and took them to plenty of places but never to Yellowstone or Glacier Park. If it were me, I'd take them along but kennel them during the day or for the few days that you will be inside those two NP's.

We had one of them along when we went to the north unit of Custer NP in ND. We were driving our toad... a soft top jeep. Came to a herd of bison scattered on and alongside the road. Maybe 40 females with young. We must have been on a one way part of the road because turning around wasn't an option. Going forward with the likely hood of one of the bison putting her head into the jeep to get the dog was a real concern. I was raised on a farm in ND. I know cows but not bison. We inched our way through the herd. They were scattered enough that we could zig zag around the ones laying down. The others moved out of the way. There were NO bulls in with them. I knew that before we attempted this.

I turned and looked our dog in the eyes and gave the "be quiet" signal. and maintained that eye contact with her more than I looked around. There was just one female that put her nose up to the plastic side window and seemed to peer inside and check out the dog. Our dog was scared stiff but did not bark. She did not even let out a soft growl. We made it through.

There are herds of bison that roam free in Yellowstone and quite often are in the parking lots near Mammoth Hot Springs. I've seen them near the mud pots, too. Just off to the side of the board walk. Just be aware of that.

Our dogs have been Rving since 2004, including 5 trips to Yellowstone. We do not take the dogs in the truck when sightseeing in National Parks. The trailer is their home and they are just fine there.

If you stay in West Yellowstone at Grizzly RV Park there are thousands of acres of National Forest on the other side of the fence where fido can walk or run off leash. There are National Forest campgrounds, some with electric sites, not far from West Yellowstone where the dog can be off leash outside the campground. If you stay in Gardiner, MT; there is a National Forest campground just North of town on the road to Jardine and again thousands of acres to roam. The RV park in Gardiner use to offer pet walking services for a fee.

Safe travels!

Here's what the Park Service has to say about it: Regulations Regarding Pets

I spend most of my days in the park hiking, fishing and wildlife watching - much of it done in the back-country. Myself, I would not bring my dogs, the rules are too restrictive.

Good thread.
Not trying to hijack, but we're wrestling with this, now.
New family dog. She's 5 months.

Never had a dog before, and we've not been out camping with her, yet.
I'm afraid our June vacation (not YNP, but Grand Canyon, Bryce, Zion, etc...) will be too much for her.

She's part of the family, and I hate to leave her behind, but I feel like it would be the safe thing to do.

We are going there too, but decided to have our 140lb Bernese Mountain dog visit his grandfather for the 3 1/2 week trip. I hate to leave him for long amounts of time in the mh and he loves my father-in-law. On a funny note, when my father-in-law was just out of surgery and groggy he asked for our dog.... not the grandchildren or other granddogs... it didn't go over well with the rest of the family, but he does love our boy.

Have always taken the dog(s) along on trips, including Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Bryce, Arches, etc. Even when they didn't "love" traveling, they did love the camping.

When we went to Yellowstone we wanted a vacation without pets so we left the dogs behind, they love camping so it wasn't easy. They love visiting grama's house so no big deal. I did miss them on the trip but we were able to enjoy our trip more not having to worry about them. Awesome trip & now want to go back to Yellowstone in the winter.
