I would disregard this post. He tells everyone the same thing, Got to have a Cummins! BS.

I have owned a couple of gasoline Fords in my life but I have never owned a Ford diesel so cannot speak from firsthand experience. I do know a couple of people who have own(ed) 6.0's and, coincidentally, just yesterday I was talking to a friend who recently had his 6.0 strand him for the second time. The first time it puked antifreeze all over. This time he was pulling a trailer with a bobcat on it and the truck just quit. $3500 dollars and a few new injectors later he is now shopping for a Chevy.

Friend #2 gave up on his because he couldn't keep it out of the repair shop. He used it for his work and couldn't afford the downtime and because his work takes him into remote areas of northern Alberta, he didn't feel he could trust it anymore. He now drives a 2500 Dodge Hemi.

Friend #3 bleeds Ford blue. Wouldn't own anything else. His dad owned a Ford dealership when he was young so he has been saturated with Fords all his life. A few years ago we were discussing his new (at the time) 6.0 truck. He candidly told me "This is a complicated engine that is expensive to repair - and I won't own it when it is out of warranty." And he didn't, either. He got rid of it the day his warranty expired.

I bought an '04 F250 6.0 new and drove it 53,000+ miles before trading up for an '07 F350 6.0 new that now has 70,000+ miles.
'04 had EGR replaced at about 35,000 under warranty. Otherwise no problems.
'07 had a cam sensor go bad at about 52,000 miles replaced under warranty. Otherwise no problems.
'04 used for light towing. '07 has towed the 35' 5er something over 12,000 miles including 6 trips in Colorado mountains.

It's all about risk. There are thousands of the Ford 6.0 PSD out there that have never had a problem. In addition to the complex design that has some flaws that cause problems, many of the problem engines had some leftover casting sand floating around...

If you don't have the casting sand issue and you happen to get the parts that are on the good side of the tolerances, then you will have a truck that runs great. Go the other way and you will have problems.

How much risk do you want to take on? You can check the repair history and do some basic maintenance pretty reasonable as for costs. You want less risk, you might want to do some of the fixes mentioned (lots of threads on this). As you do more to reduce risk, the costs go up. At the end of the day, how much risk can you afford? Can you afford to reduce the risk?

There is no doubt that you can get a good deal on the Fords with 6.0PSD. Just go in with eyes wide open and as much information as you can get. If I was a Ford fan and wanted a diesel, I would be looking at one and doing the mods to reduce the risk.

bought mine new in 04, use it sparingly but have had the major mods done. Did have a large spread in temps. Cost me around $4000 to have studs, oil cooler and BPD egr installed (we have state emmisions inspections). The guy that did it is a ford master tech. Said the engine was in real good shape, he also upgraded to all the latest TSB's while at it. I told him to leave the computer alone and he did. I run a hypertech miser tune, 4 inch turbo back exhaust and thats it. Get good milage at around 18-19 empty (80mph avg) as I didnt find any real difference at 70 mph in fuel milage and wife wanted to go faster!

Its our travel vehicle we have a small TT to pull. even before the work went to montana and pulled the big hills no problem. But as other have indicated if you want wan be ready to add some $$ to ensure its good. My BIL has one and it has been problematic, but he wont get rid of it and it has around 140K on and he doesn not take the care of it it requires. Due to work enviro he was told to change oil at 2500 miles, yeah right, lucky to catch at 5000. But he wont get rid of it. Likes its power much better than his old 7.3, but 7.3 did get about 3 mpg better he said.

So once again if ya want one, go in understanding that it can be a problem, but that it also can be a very good engine with a bad rep. kinda like Ms Kitty on gunsmoke if ya know what I mean (or Ms Lilly on Lawman) if you a western buff.

I have an 03... Got it at 75000, now has 144000+. Warranty paid for a turbo and a new EGR cooler (was leaking outside). In the past couple of years I have spent 2,700 on sensors and a High pressure oil pump.

Had a 7.3 previously, don't know how many cam position sensors I put in, but I kept a spare in the truck.

At least the 6.0 I don't have to worry about the transmission. Fords earlier trannies and Dodge's aren't that great.

Bought my 06 in Aug. of 09 with 72,000 on the clock. Clean OASIS. 106,000 on her now. Most of it towing. 3 injectors and an oil leak fixed under warranty. I bought the Ford Diesel Care Extended Warranty so I'm good to Aug 2013. I love this truck and would not be afraid to take it anywhere.
As usual I noticed that whenever a Ford engine is mentioned especially the 6.0 the most if not first to slam them is the Dodge boys. I guess when your always last your the first to mouth off.

If you can find a good one they're certainly priced right. The 6.0 did cost Ford millions in factory warranty and buy back issues. When I was looking for a tow vehicle I was tempted to possibly get a 2006 6.0, as that was purportly the least issues years with respect to warranty issues. However, there is a reason why low mileage good condition 7.3's are bringing about the same money.

My 2005 E450 has been perfect with no issues. I've got a guy that want to buy it for $21,000. I haven't decided yet if I want to part with it.

The replacement would be a Monaco class A DP with the Cummins M11. People say the M11 is a fantastic engine. BUT, guess how much an oil change costs on the M11 compared to the 6.0... like 3X more

The maintenance on the M11 is EXPENSIVE.
