The last time I stopped at the Lewis and Clark RV Park in Shelby Montana, they have metal lockers for rent, by the day, week or month. Some were using them for storing extra liquor they didn't want to take across the border, firearms. etc. You furnished your own lock and at the time, I thought the rental fee was reasonable. You could give them a call and see if they still have them. It was 3 or 4 years back when I was last there.
From Shelby, it is a nice drive to the west to Cut Bank,to Browning and on north to the parks.

I always thought I would use a pawn shop while I was up north, but didn't know if they would take spare boxes of ammunition.

Thanks for the input!
The gun shop seems the best option to try first.

Back a few years ago, a resident of our town was on a month-long vacation and ended up in northern Minnesota and wanted to cross into Canada. He had a gun with him. He called our police department and spoke with an officer he knew, took it to Fed Ex, shipped it to our PD and headed into Canada. When he got home, came by the station and picked it up.
Just another suggestion.

WyoTraveler wrote "I have heard they will put locks on your weapons if you are traveling through to Alaska for rifles only."
This absolutely not true. Yes long guns, including rifles, are permitted to be transported through Canada when you purchase a transportation permit at the port of entry. However, they (Canadian border patrol officers?) do not put locks on your guns.

Years and years ago I pulled up to the Waterton border and they asked me if I had any weapons. I said yes and handed them my .357 revolver. On my way back through a couple days later they handed it back.
Would that work today, no idea.
