Sure makes things better when making a turn....Think about how the chains change length when turning.....and what could happen if they are not long enough.

MPond wrote: So if most states require that your safety chains be crossed, how does that apply to tow bars that have channels for the safety chains, such as the Roadmaster Sterling?
I found this picture online, but wasn't sure if crossing the safety chains on a towbar like this was "correct":
Here is a picture from the Roadmaster website that shows the safety chains (cables) not crossed:
Any comments?
Another thread mentioned this, but I didn't want to hijack it with a question that wasn't related to the OP.
Good Grief.
This whole thread is because a picture in an AD shows the cables "uncrossed"??????
IDEA!!!!!!
How about we take a look at the Manufacturer's Instructions?
From: Roadmaster Sterling Towbar Instructions
Quote from page 13, "How to use Safety Cables"
" 2. Always cross cables under the hitch as shown in Figure 3. In the event of hitch failure, the crossed cables may help support the tow bar preventing it from pole-vaulting the tow vehicle.
Love the term "pole-vaulting", by the way...
I guess the answer to the O.P.'s question is really: READ THE INSTRUCTIONS.

An AD? The product page on the manufacturer website shows them uncrossed, as do 4 out of 5 pictures in the manual.

I must have overlooked this part of the instructions - which is why I started this thread and asked the question.
But as they say - a picture is worth a thousand words, so it would be nice if they used the picture of the crossed cables in the manual for the other 4 pictures as well.
As I said about 5 posts back - I'll try them crossed next time out.

Yep - we established that a few posts back. I overlooked that part of the manual, and only noticed the pictures of them not crossed. I will cross them next time I tow the Jeep.
