We plan to leave San Diego the end of May to go to Alaska and return approx. Sept.1st. We would like to visit Vancouver Island either on the way up or back. Any suggestions on when is the best time would be appreciated. Also any recommendations on where is the best place to ferry across, Rv Parks, and things to do would be a big help.

I would use the Tsawwassen Ferry. Travel on the island is usually very slow.

Use Fidalgo Bay RV Park in Anacortes as your base and take your toad on the ferry out of Anacortes. July/August would be optimum weather wise.

You could cross at Anacortes, a beautiful trip, then travel the island to Port Hardy. Take the ferry north for an unforgettable adventure, tour Alaska then return via the Alcan. Or do Alaska first. Either way you will likely need reservations well in advance for the inside passage cruise.

I would second staying in the Anacortes area. You could leave your vehicle at the ferry dock in Anacortes and walk onto the ferry. They have busses that run from Sidney to Victoria. Taking a RV on the ferry is big money. It's a great ferry ride through the San Juans to the island.

Second Romore suggestion although that can be reversed and ferry to Port hardy ond do the Island on the return trip.
If you do tour the Island I really recommend you also stop in Post McNeill and take the short ferry to Alert Bay to tour the First nation museum there. "U-Mista" is unforgettable!

A few years ago we decided to take all of Sept. and do the Island. We were gone all of Sept. but never made it past Campbell River, which is only half way. There is so much to see. This year we hightailed up to Port Hardy and worked our way down. It was spectacular.
I would recommend either the Washington State ferry from Anacortes or the Coho from Port Angles. We prefer hwy 101 and the Coho as you miss the insanity of Seattle.
Once on the Vancouver Island there are two convenient RV parks close to Victoria. One, West Bay is right on the harbour and you can take the little passenger ferry right into town. The other, Fort Victoria, is a little way out but on the bus route and is a little cheaper and better.
I'd 2nd Alert Bay, also the boat trip from Gold River to Friendly Cove is a spectacular day trip.
Telegraph Cove is a must and you can go Whale or Bear watching from there.
I could go on forever but I'm packing the fiver getting ready to head to San Diego.

If you enjoy bicycle riding, there is the "Galloping Goose Trail" which can be accessed right from the Fort Victoria CG. It is also an easy ride from there into Victoria and a great way to see the area.
We spent a whole Summer on Vancouver Island and NEVER ran out of things to do or places to see.

Galloping Goose Trail
You will find all you need at that site. Take your bathing suit if you will be going to Sooke Potholes Provincial Park near the end of the trail. It is a spectacular way to refresh after a hot ride.
Also check out Google Maps for anywhere and put in a couple of destinations. Get directions, when available there will be a bicycle symbol. Click on it, and it will show bike routes in the area as well as a suggested route for your destinations. Not always a bike path, but a suggested route. One nice thing about Vancouver Island is that outside of Victoria and the main routes, there is very little traffic so getting off the path for a look around, is generally quite safe.
