I went to a CB once just a few miles from home and I wouldn't drive across country to go to one. $25 or $30 is not much money to pay to park hook up and take your time. My TT has a kitchen too, so we don't need to eat breakfast out when we're away from home.

The problem with being OK to spend $25-$30 at a campground instead of Cracker Barrel or any other free commercial parking lot is the distance to get to the campground. When you're on a long run trying to make time on major highways between points A and B it is often time consuming and gas consuming to go off route to/from a campground.
The popular free camping parking lots are great for quick one-night sleeping stops - that's why we use them.

It isn't my idea of "recreation" to stay at a CB either, but it isn't my idea to pay $30 to $40 to stay in a campground for 8 hours either. It also isn't my idea of "recreation" to stay at a campground for 8 hours. If I want to recreate I want to stay around the campground long enough to use the pool or at least the spa. Pulling into a campground at 9:00 pm you would not be able to use any of the amenities. I'll keep using CB and rest stops.

When we travel it is usually dark by time I get off the blacktop. Last thing I want to do is drive around in the dark on strange roads to go to a strange campground. Most times CB and WM are right there along side the hwy, easy in and out even in the dark. Usually well lit with people around. Just run in to verify if it is ok to overnite go back out crawl in bed and sleep. Wake up and make coffee or go inside for coffee and get back on the road. But it's to each his own, if you wanna spend $30 on a camp ground instead of $30 on breakfast then fine. But I ain't never spent $30 on a breakfast lol...Here this link may be helpful...allstay It's a little hard to navigate around the web site now but once you figure it out it has lots of info on places to overnite at. There is even an app for your smart phone.

Many town ordinances do not allow the overnighting like that, even at Walmarts and Cracker Barrels.
Why not call ahead and check with the store first? And then you can make your plans accordingly. I like how docj is thinking. The nice thing to do in return for being allowed to park there overnight, would be at least spend some money there at the establishment.
I just wonder how long it will be until things change and places like Walmart or CB stop allowing overnighters...

My wife asked the manager of the Desert Center (I think),CA, Walmart about this. He could not alow overnighting because Walmart was a tenent sharing the property with other businesses and were at the mercy of the landlord. The Walmart south of DIA in Denver is owned by Walmart and, regardless of city ordances, can allow overnighters as long as they don't charge for it. It's their property! But, the manager still has the final say. Another "owned" Walmart location we inquired about does not allow overnighting due to being in a high-crime area and not wanting the liability.
This would be true with CB and the others, as well. With most of these companies, it's a marketing decision to allow overnighters...it's a revenue generator. And the baby-boomers are retiring in ever larger numbers and many are RVing. It's all about the Benjamins!

Well I'll give ya that but no one's talking about a quick one nighter & breakfast at "CB" when yer on the move as being a recreation spot!!!
Where's everyone's sense of adventure????? That's why we have a self contained RV. We alway's carry a full load (90 gallons) of water when we're traveling over the road and trying to cover 400 to 500+ miles a day. I like pulling quickly off the Interstate into "CB" or "WM" or Flying J or a hospital or church or some such, take a hot shower, climb into some clean sheets, watch some TV & have a snack then get some sleep. Next morning early it's coffee in bed and watching the news for a bit, shower, have a nice breakfast in the 5'er or "CB" then quickly hit the road again. We can stay at a CG when we're close to home or when we get to where we're going. It's the adventure of never knowing where we're going to stay for the night when we're on the move that helps make the trip fun!!!
Happy camping!!! See y'all down the road!!!

I like Walmart for a quick overnight stop because I have yet to find a Walmart that doesn't have security driving around at night. Even the one or two that we've been to that aren't open 24 hours had security.
