If you go through Amarillo, TX you will pass by the Golden Light Cafe which opened in 1946 at this same location. I believe it is one of the oldest continuously operating restaurants along Route 66. Great burgers and even better greasy fries.

How is the overheating of motor homes on the desert portions of this trip?
To cool we need run our gen and house AC.
I have heard horror stories in my youth of autos overheating terribly in the deserts.

Oklahoma has the longest uninterrupted section that includes such things as the Blue Whale, the worlds largest Totem Poles, and many other kitschy items. Arizona has a significant section too. Your coach will not make it to Oatman Az but it's worth the trip in your toad. If in Seligman Az. eat at the Road Kill Cafe. While in Winslow you can "stand on the corner" of Eagles fame and in Holbrook, you can spend a night at the TeePee Motel......there is a book out but I don't have the name in front of me about Route 66. It gives you mile by mile trip advice but it starts in the East and ends in the West. If going the other way you have to read the book from back to front.... .....Dennis

With Ref. to the heat, Even my antiquated coach had no problems. We kept both the dash AC and overhead AC running to keep my mother and the rest of us comfortable.

The first time I drove it was on my honeymoon trip from one Air Force base in CA to another one in IL. It was the major and most direct route from the upper midwest to Southern CA. Forty four years later I traveled a lot of what remains of the section from Springfield, MO back to CA. The second time I did it in my motor coach. I actually remembered some sections of it.
It was nice to get off of the interstates and drive the two lane roads and pass through the small towns. It clips a small corner of Kansas and the route 66 shield is painted on the road to let you know that you are on it.

No different then the new interstate roads, most places they run paralell to each other. Only in small stretches does it go away from I-40. From Needles, Ca it goes out a few miles to Goffs,Ca then it goes under the I-40 at Essex and it goes out even further away up towards Cadiz, Ca and back towards Ludlow. I actually enjoy driving that route and checking out where general Patton used to unload his military tanks for desert training at Bagdad, Ca.

We did some stretches of it in Arizona last weekend in our car. The section from Oatman, AZ towards Laughlin, NV is very scenic, but I would do it in your toad.

Thank all of you for such valuable information. We live in Jacksonville Fl. After a brief "kitchen table discussion", we talked about taking I-10 west to Calif (with a few short stops). Connect to Rt66 in Calif and travel NE to Chicago, Then back home.
Will add details along the way. DW picks those out, I program the Garmin. Looks like mabe a 6 week (shorter/longer) adventure. Have already starte getting RV preped.
See ya along the way!

Thanks gbopp for the nice link. We'll probably pick up 66 in May after leaving Memphis. Oklahoma rt 66 looks to be a great concentration of stops. Diesel prices will dictate how far west we venture b-4 heading north and then back east.
