My electric brakes are not working very well. I did replaced the brake shoes and the magnetics and had the brake drums turned in a machine shop. So it is safe to assume the mechanical part is operating o.k. When I measured the amps on the truck output I read 12 amps. I measured at each trailer wheel brake 12 amps, too! I believe it shoud read at each brake only 3 amps. Any suggestions about what could be wrong. Thanks for your help

What are the symptoms of them "not working very well"?
Are they too aggressive, not aggressive enough, delayed response, not working on manual application- what's happening?
And what brand/model of brake controller do you have?

I think you need to look at the settings on your meter. Sounds like you are reading VOLTS not AMPS. You can't have 12A everywhere.
Unless you are using a clip on ampmeter you must seperate the wires and have the meter "in line" to measure amps.

Have you adjusted your brakes since they were installed?? New brakes need a seat in/break in time. They will need to be adjusted about every 500-1000 miles when new. They will wear rapidly until they have fully seated to the drums. Usually takes 3,000-5,000 miles on new brakes.

If you are reading 12 AMPS, at each wheel you have a problem. And those AMPS will burn up your 12GA wires. You need to check your meter. Hopefully you are reading volts instead of AMPS.
You should have 12AMPS for all four wheels. But 3AMPS draw at each wheel. You should have 12V at each wheel.

You will need an ampmeter that reads DC.

12 amps to ground is normal or combined draw might be normal. I think just 3 amps through each brake coil is normal. Higher through the coil might indicate a short. Have you put something iron or steel to the magnets to see that each activates?
