My dealer is going to install for me an auxiliary fuel tank in the bed of the 450. But the tank is just a basic transfer type fuel tank with a place to cut out a hole for adapting as an auxiliary tank.

For those who have recent auxiliary tank installs, what type of transfer systems are you using? I have a new F450.

1. I don't want to have it just gravity feed which keeps the fuel tank at max capacity constantly. I fear that will mess with the tank ventilation and may cause fuel to leak out the truck fuel cap.

2. I don't want to remove the stock truck fuel filler cap.

3. I'm also curious if the DEF system will be interfered with in any way.

Thanks

I wouldn't do it right now.

I don't know where to find it, but Ford does have a service bulletin out regarding problems with the 6.7L diesel.

One of the causes, according to Ford, are auxilliary fuel tanks in the truck.

Ford has been somewhat shameful lately, turning folks down for what seems to be obvious warranty issues.

The service bulletin on auxilliary fuel tanks was issued after an owners HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) froze up on him at 35,000 miles on 6.7L diesel.

Its just not a good time to add one right now.

I have one in 2011 f350 it is gravity feed I put an electric valve in outlet.I turn valve on,using 1 of upfitter switches, when I need fuel seams to be working well no over fill problems.Valve is normally closed so when switch is off or truck shut off it closes.Does not interfer w/DEF.Problem with HPFP is being blamed on water in fuel Ford is saying for dealer to pay attention to aux tanks.

I would go with transfer only and run the the fuel threw a quality water separator/filter system, and visually check the fuel before adding to the main tank.

I have a 12v pump and gas station style fuel nozzle. When the main tank gets low, I pull over and refill the truck. I also have a clear water separator and filter on the setup so if there was fuel contamination I'd know right away.

I have had a 115 Aux Fuel tank from Dually Depot in Elkhart, IN. installed in 2008 and I have had no trouble in 4 years of use. When Regular fuel tank gets to around 3/4 fill, the pump of Aux system goes on and fills Truck's normal tank.
With 35 Gal. in reg Tank, then 115 Gal. in aux., 150 Gallons gives 1500 miles before fuel stop.

Worth a look..........

Oh yeah. I've been reading the posts and am quite aware of Ford's attempts to find a so called reason.

That is the primary reason I'm having my dealer install the tank. I've talked with them at length about future problems and they see no similarities between the two issues.

I know them personally and I truly think they have my back on this.

I've got a 98 gallon Transfer Flow tank in my 2008 Ford F350 with 6.4 L diesel. I think what Ford is worried about is water from condensation. There is a drain valve which can be opened to purge any water which may have accumulated in the factory fuel tank. Regular use of that drain valve ought to prevent damage to the engine.

Best of luck then. Just wanted to make sure you were aware of the "rumors" floating around the Internet about this engine and auxilliary fuel tanks.

why the big deal about filtering and water separating from the aux to the main?

You use the same nozzel at the station to fill up the main. So why can't you trust the same nozzle at the station to fill up the aux.

sure Ok the ole condensation story. I been running gravity feed from the aux to the main with no "extra" filters and separators for years -no problems.
