We will be leaving the cold and snow of Mich. for warm weather.
I will be pulling our 5`er and we travel with 2 of mans best friend.
They travel well, but we do need to stop every 3 hours or so.
With the time of the year and not knowing road conditions, weather, and travel time, how far we make it each day might vary.
I figure 10 hours a day and have found campgrounds that are open yr round.
So how far in advance do you call for a spot when on the road? If all goes well we might want to push on or stop early if need be. I do have generator to hit the Walmart,Cracker Barrel if we need to. But would like to push on to the CG.
Is 4 hours enough this time of yr?

Thanks for your feedback.

I've NEVER made reservations for winter months and SELDOM make reservations even during the summer months, other than holiday weekends.

My experience is the warmer the weather and the longer the stay the more you need reservations heading south. One night stops should not require reservations. Since some campgrounds do not permit refunds on deposits, we call a few hours before a desired stop and ask if they have room for the night; but we do not make reservations. If you expect to stay in any area for a week or more, I would recommend you call for reservations. Camp on!

You will never need reservation on the road in winter.
Never need one in summer if you travel mid week.
Almost every campground has overnight spots, you will always find a spot if you pull in before 4pm.
Watch out for special events like NASCAR, College ball, homecoming week. That can fill every park for miles around.

Plot a few along your route, and have their phone numbers on a map. Then as you realize you need to stop call the place you are approaching. Also get the rest areas and truck stops plotted. You probably need a pull through so you don't have to unhook, so make sure they have one available. Hope you have reservations at your destination, as Florida is usualy booked a year ahead. Also realize when you get south, it may be still very cold even freezing unless you go to a place far enough south. I also plot fuel stations that have large areas like Pilot.

We stayed at LA state parks on the way and didn't have any problems, but this was during the week. Call a head and be careful out there!!!

Same here. I always have several potential parks listed, and decide as I get closer where I want to stay. Then I have all the info ready to call and make sure they have sites available. As others have said, you shouldn't have a problem during the winter except during Mardi Gras, spring break, etc., and then only further south.

We call a few hours to less than an hour ahead when we head south or back north. Never had a problem with getting a site.

Thanks all that answered up so quick!!

I have ploted couple diff spots along the way. We do have our site locked in for 6 weeks when we get there. We use trailer life campground book and also "The Next Exit" to help us as we travel.

Happy Camping.

We rarely make reservations when we travel and do not have problems. At most, we call when we are 1-2 hours away to see if spaces are available, and they normally are.
