Last spring we traveled from Davenport Iowa to Maryland in our TV, having left the newly purchased Eagle at the Iowa dealer's lot. We took I-80 all the way, paying tolls all across Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Total cost wasn't significant, although it seemed the whole stretch was under construction.
On the return trip We took I-70, much better. But returning with the TT in tow,in Colorado we decided to take the E-470 bypass, leaving I-25 north of the city to hooking back up with it just south of town. Total miles, 47. A month later we got the bill for the trip - nearly $30! I'm wondering if there is a more expensive toll road in the country?

You are charged per axle on E470. There also has been many problems with unlawful charges on that toll road. We always tow on I-25 because of the high tariff per axle.

The charges for the toll roads around Denver are a disgrace. I never drive them unless I have to.

Nobody I know uses that stupid road, way too expensive.
Funny thing is rumor was a private company wanted to put road in, but state stopped them. Seems private roads can set their own speed limits. Governor wet his pants, and immediately stopped it.

We were excited when we heard about E470 around the east side of Denver as it would keep us out of the mousetrap (I70/I25 junction) while vacationing from Oklahoma to Estes Park. But the first time around 8 years ago between north of Denver to I-70 headed east, (which is only 1/4 the distance around Denver) cost me over $15 for MH and toad (4 axles total). Never again. I'm used to 30-40 miles of Turnpike here in Oklahoma for around $4.75-$5.50 with 4 axles.

I googled the distance and found this Denver Post article, stating it's only 47 miles. I don't believe much of what the Post says, but that sounds about right. The story shows a recent rate increase of one station at $2/80 and four others at $3.15 each for two axels. That's $15.40, over 30 cents a mile. I think there is a 20% discount if you have the transponder. I thought it was built privately with some deal with the local governments, but not being a Denver person, wouldn't argue that. Article

We used the bypass last summer from north to south. All the toll booths were closed and no signage so we just drove on through. About two months later I got a bill in the mail for $9 for our truck camper. Didn't strike me as being out of line, compared to the Florida Turnpike and other toll roads down here.
It was well worth it to us to pay the $9 and avoid getting into the "mouse trap" area of where the two Interstates, 25 and 70 cross, in urban Denver.

Just wanted to clear up some of the confusion about E-470. It is indeed a private toll road and was funded soley by private bonds (not government). The toll rates are set at a level that pays back the debt which I believe is somewhere around $1.5 billion. Yep, it's not cheap but that's what happens when the government decides not to fund the roadways. I do drive it quite a bit - since it's private you are cruising at 75 mph with little or no traffic and no stopping since they have gone all automatic. Worth it in MPG with our rig!!
