A rare (not really) cold front is passing thru the valley today but in case those of you still on your way down are disappointed, do not dis pare, another will be coming thru next week. These things happen with regularity but do not last long. My thermometer indicates 40 degrees but as I look out my window while typing this I see a few Gophers and Badgers trekking up the street without overshoes or snow shoes. My 10 mile bicycle ride was not too bad as I did have more than the usual clothes on. It is calm out but cloudy which kept the temperature from hitting the freezing mark. Back to the 80s by Monday. AND THERE IS NO SNOW!

Kinda of weird though, watching people walk by wearing ear-muffs this morning.

Must be the clouds up north here. Temperature is stuck at 40. With no wind. Feels much better than the upper 50s and 30 mph winds we had yesterday.

This Gopher is now conviced that the valley gets about 3-6 weeks of "winter" temps each year. Once I accepted that (and plan accordingly)things got a lot easier/simpler.
Today I'll sit back this morning and have coffee while enjoying the sight of palm trees and watching the weather channel showing our "up north" weather, this afternoon finish shampoo'ing the carpet in the 5'ver, then maybe go out for a nice Winter Texan early bird supper special. If it does warm up enough, maybe even be able to enjoy happy hour with the neighbors or go for a walk on the beach.
Like I said, once I accepted the 3-6 weeks of "winter" down here, life got easy. Now if all I was going to be away for was a month or two (during this time period) then maybe I would head further south to help ensure a real warm snowbird experience. Of course that could cost more also.

I was here in '03 when we had snow on Christmas Eve that lasted until almost noon on Christmas day. I was at Padre Island National Seashore up by Corpus Cristi several years ago when the bay froze over and killed lots of fish. I have also been out pulling pumps, drilling wells and thawing water lines at minus 30 up north. This is much better.

25° here in Three Rivers this morning and our water hose froze over night. Already up to 35°, headed for 60° this afternoon. I checked the temp at home and it is 3° as I type, so I will put up with a few days of sub freezing weather here, knowing it won't last more than a couple of hours, Vs days on end of sub freezing and sub zero temps at home.

To demonstrate how unusual these cold fronts actually are, many businesses have difficulty heating their establishments when they occur. Nearly froze to death sitting in a Pizza Restaurant in Brownsville a few years ago and watched the waitresses go by wearing their heaviest winter coats at work.
