On both Silverados I owned, a 74 and a 2004 I now own, you just order and install a replacemant left hinge. Install it on the right, two bolts.

Not a bad idea. I hate to lose the removable aspect of the tailgate, because I do it a lot, but I guess it's pretty much necessary.
I also remember lots of duallies having non-removable gates because of the identification lights that they have on them, but I can't remember how it was done. I think there was a pop rivet across the hinge slot on the Dodges.

Why are Ford tailgates so popular and not Dodge, Chevy, etc? The tailgate on my Dodge has a few dents and dings. Maybe that'll make it a little less desirable...

The newer ford gates have the super duty embossed into the gate along with the tailgate step. Lots of newer stuff. And they fit back to a 99? I think!

Thanks to your thread I just bought one. I don't need the hassle of some idiot messing with my tailgate. I just installed an Amp Research Bed Step and this is also easy to steal although the thief will have to have a ratchet and the right socket to remove it.

As a retired officer from south Florida, I can honestly say I've never seen or heard of a stolen truck tailgate. Damn thieves will take anything these days...crazy.

This is curious. Not sure why or how that happened to you as the Pop & Lock device is an internal tailgate mechanism. Even if it did rub and scratch, it would be internal and not show. The one I installed is a bracket and actuator wired in to only move the OEM internal keyed locking mechanism. It works quite well and to me worth the $100 spent on it. I found frequently I would have my truck started and needed the tailgate down, only to go back there and it was locked. Now anytime I unlock the doors, the tailgate also unlocks making it convenient for me. This should be the way it comes from the factory.
I know it is not a guarantee the tailgate won't get stolen, just a deterrence. Hell, anyone truly wants in your truck they only have to break a window and there's nothing anyone can do about that. In fact I did have that happen on my last truck, damn meth addicts.

OK, I had a lock that sort of hooked into the handle and was on the outside of the tailgate. not what you had. must have gotten the name confused.
