Like many things in life, this has a bit of evolving history.

Winnebago came first, and as I understand it, they wanted to open more dealers without violating territorial agreements with existing dealers. So Itasca was born, generally with similar models but upgraded features, a bit pricier, and a new family of dealers to sell and service them.

We chose our Itasca over the comparable Winnie because we wanted the standard or available features on the Itasca. We also liked the nearby dealer, Barrington Motor Sales in Bartlett, IL.

Aside from the amenities, the quality and function should be about identical. I would buy either.

I have heard, but cannot confirm, that Winnebago plans to merge the lines and eventually drop the Itasca line. Given their committment to customer support, that should not be a problem for service down the road.
This is what I have read about the early days of Itasca in addition Winnebago also wanted to offer a different chassis / engine combination other than the Winnebago had at the time (another way to get around being tied into a long term contract with just 1 supplier).

Winnebago Industries has 2 motorhome lines so they can have more dealers within a close area.

in 2007 when we were looking at the 35J model line the *only* differences between the two were colour palette choices of the outside paint and inside. Both had the ability to configure the same. Btw if you're ordering new get a price sheet from either dealer. they are freely available and allow you to go down the page and look at what each thing can be.

When we ordered our Coach last March we had two dealers trying to get our money. I always thought that Itasca was a higher price coach. But just after we ordered our Sightseer the Itasca Dealer offered us the same coach for 500 dollars less. We had already signed the order form at the other dealer. Hope this helps.

We've been doing some shopping for a new motorhome lately. One thing we noticed was that the Itasca line comes with many features that are optional on the Winnebagos. If you equip similar coaches with the same features there's generally less than $1000.00 difference on the list prices.

As for the Itasca dealer offering the same coach for less we had a similar experience. It's hard to know how sincere those offers are since there was no commitment or obligation on their part.

Winnebago Industries is the company; there is no Itasca company. Every Itasca came with a Winnebago badge on it somewhere.

Winnebago and Itasca are two of the company's RV brand names. There is substantial overlap of product lines between these two brands, in some years it was almost complete with equivalent model lines and and floor plans within those lines.

The introduction of the Itasca brand was not about dealer relationships. Most dealers carried both brands, and many dealers still sell more than one Winnebago brand.

The Itasca line was created to use a Chevy chassis at a time when Winnebago had a contractual obligation to build Winnebago motorhomes on Chrysler Corporation (Dodge) chassis. Initially, the two brands did not overlap so much because the Dodge and Chevy chassis had different dimensions and capabilities. When Chrysler got out of the motorhome chassis business, things changed.

Winnebago Industries has produced other RV brands beside Winnebago and Itasca. They currently produce the Era line of B's and the Sunnybrook line of towables; in the past there was an Ultimate brand of A's and Rialta brand of C motorhomes. When people see the Winnebago Industries badge on an Era, Rialta or Ultimate, they think of it as a Winnebago. Sometimes people don't get there mentally when the Winnebago-built motorhome is an Itasca.
