Kind of... Though I've never done this, I've read about a trick you can use to move grey into black: Both drains are Y'd together into the outlet pipe. Leave the outlet pipe capped then first open the grey valve before opening the black one. The higher level (and therefore higher pressure) grey will back flow into the black tank. Then close the black followed by the grey valve. This does leave grey water in the pipe when you do go do dump, though.
You can get a twist on blade valve and use it instead of a cap. Thats what I used instead of the cap in my motorhome, there always seemed to be a couple of cups of leftover drainage everytime I took the cap off and that solved it.

Quote: I like the idea of getting a Pre-1998 diesel & never having to deal with smogging it.
I figure I'd be able to hot rod it some to handle the extra weight & hills & etc.....
In California a diesel smog check is to see if all the factory devices are on the truck, that's it. My first one was last year,2011, 65 bucks and 5 minute later I was down the road. For hauling nothing bets a diesel.
What truck and camper depends on what you really want to do with it, we search for a year before deciding on a Lance 815. Our Lance 815 was first on a 1984 1/2 ton chevie, which proved to be not enough truck, so pick a truck big enough and match up a TC for it.

The biggest drawback is we accomodate only 3 1/2 people in the TC. We do carry a tent and air mattress in a roof pod when we need a guest house.
Our 2500 watt Onan propane built-in generator operates all of our stuff, A/C, microwave, battery charger, coffee maker etc. But not all at the same time. We have 3 large AGM batteries that are kept topped up with an assist from 150 watts from solar panels. We are both in our seventies, climbing up into our queen sized bunk is on of those,"If you don't use it, ya lose it", things.
The TC is so nimble, so simple to operate, store and get underway, it is the epitome of, "Less is Best", to us. If your goals are to travel more than to park in one spot for weeks at a time, the TC is excellent.
Several years ago we were at the Nascar track in Sonoma Valley,CA We were able to get into the RV campground which is in the middle of this large road course. It was filled with many large high dollar Class A's and other very large and expensive RV's. We had lots of questions from many of the owners."I bet you get good mileage with that?" "How did you get your wife to go for it?" "You can park that thing anywhere can't you?" About 14 mpg if I pay attention. It was my wife's idea, she wanted to be able to camp on the beach at Assateague Island in Maryland. 4X4's are required. All along the Pacfic beaches from South to North we just popped into to the pull-off's and spent the night, overlooking the sea. For us it is a manageable system.

"Biggest drawbacks to having a Truck Camper?"
Long cold or rainy evenings. TC's are small and they can seem even smaller as well.
If you can spend the evening outside the camper there are NO downsides!!!!!!!!!

Biggest draw back?
It like having a lover that you can't be with always.

If you are a grumpy person, who doesn't like visitors, don't get a Truck Camper.
Strangers are always pestering you....asking about it when you are stopped, wanting to see the inside, and leave amazed and impressed once they've been inside.
After folks have been looking around for a while, I usually give my patent statement.. "YOU DO REALIZE YOU'RE STANDING IN THE BACK OF A PICKUP TRUCK?".
Usually the response is "OH..I FORGOT!"

What turned me off to truck campers was an idiot BIL who decided it would be fun to toss a fire cracker into the cabover while we were sleeping (can you tell he drank a lot).
The sitting up rather rapidly ended up with me having a concussion and head aches for several weeks.
Now anytime I'm in a truck camper I use the dinette bed. No matter how small or short.
