I went to AAA today to get some campground books. As of 2012 they are no longer free with the basic AAA plan. They told me they are only available with the AAA plus RV. AAA is now a partner with Woodall's. Basic AAA will only pay for a 6 mile tow. The upgraded plan extends that to 100 or 200 miles but does cost a lot more.

In Minnesota they sell the Camping books to all AAA members for $3.95 and $10.95 to non-members right on the sales floor. Each book covers a wide region and are now in a joint venture with Woodall's. I imagine they should be an improvement over their old camp books. They are in the larger size format instead of the former booklet format. Maps and Tour books in the familiar booklet format are still available for free to members and are kept behind the counter. In this day and age traveling with a GPS, iPhone and iPad with several apps, the books and maps are not as valuable and needed. They are just sometimes convenient.

I am going to "CALL" you on this one..................I just recieved my Renewal for March, 2012, and it CLEARLY states, in WRITING that Triptick, Travel Guides,(Which include Camp Books) ROAD MAPS ARE free, even in BASIC AAA, you do not even need RV Plus, or Premier.
I live in Michigan also. Are your dues paid up??? Did you show your card?? Did you go to the Member services desk????
I have recently been to MY AAA office, and it was no issue, so, one of us is Incorrect.

Maybe both, like has been said here, AAA can have different policies from state to state. From what I understand AAA's are sold like franchises, and maybe they can set their own policies, even within the same state.

Coach Net. If you're looking for towing/assistance.
I like Rand McNally's maps better than AAA anyway. Oh, and states still give out some nice ones, too.
Anyway, Coach Net covers all family members no matter what vehicle - my son borrows his friend's car and has trouble , or - I'm out on my motorcycle......
Also, and it took a lot of work to find this answer - there are gaps in AAA coverage (geographically speaking). Yeah, you'll get reimbursed (eventually), but YOU find someone to help you in an area far from home....
We've used Coach Net 3 or 4 times, and no matter where, the help was excellent. I guess the best thing I can say is, 5 years after signing up, I haven't ever considered changing!

The Rand McNally map book sold at Target always has the current year construction zones marked. They are cheap enough you should buy a new one every year. I believe the same with Walmart's map book.

We've been happy with AAA. It was nice when the wife's van went down to call them rather than having to search for somebody to tow it.
