My brother bought a house in Cabo and is moving there in March. We live at the west coast of Canada, near Vancouver.

There comes the question of a truck full of personal belongings and getting it there.

One thought is to rent a big truck, load all his stuff in it and drive there. My thought is to hang my TT off the back and make a holiday out of it. I have not discussed this with my brother. I wanted to do a bit of research first before saying anything to him about helping him move. He may want to just put it all in a container and ship it there. But there are a couple vehicles to drive there too.

I have a few concerns:

I know that you really have to pay attention to detail and make sure all paperwork, permits and so on is done letter perfect.

One concern I have is the route to take and where to cross the border. Where is the safest place to cross and travel? I have read about a lot of the challenges Mexico is facing and recognize that there are some problem areas that need to be avoided and want to be educated before offering to embark on an adventure such as this.

And I understand that there is a proper protocol to know and follow when dealing with the border people.

I am wondering about travel, two guys alone in a truck making their way to Cabo. Yes, safety is a concern. I am unknowledgeable about a lot of this.

If we bring my TT, should we look for specific places to overnight?

Can any of you Mexico folks offer some insight and suggestions into this query?

Thanks.

Sounds like quite an adventure. But there will be some problems. In order to cross with a rental truck you need permission from the truck owner. I doubt any Canadian rental company will allow this. There is some sort of size limit for bringing in a truck. Anything much bigger than a pickup cannot cross. You will not be able to get that trailer across behind a vehicle that is not yours. This is a complicated subject and you are asking in the wrong forum. Try Mexconnect.com. If you have an FM3 a certain amount of household goods can enter duty free. I will give you the short solution to the move. Sell all your stuff in Canada and buy Mexican furniture. Much easier. There are Mexican movers who will take your stuff from the Mexican border but you also have to cross the US border. Time for a plan B. You will have ZERO safety problems going to Cabo.

Moisheh thanks for the input.
Somehow, I figured I would run into a snag in the plan.
I guess I'll have to let my brother do it without my help.

If your brother is moving to Mexico, my guess is that he knows about the protocol for importing his goods duty free and since it sounds like you haven't yet talked to him, it is possible he has the paperwork worked out already.

You can read Rolly Brook's site on How to move to Mexico. He moved to the mainland and some of the rules are a little different than for the Baja.

Moisheh is right about rented vehicles. You need permission from the rental company and if you're moving a lot of "stuff" you need to follow protocol to avoid paying a duty.

Now might be the time to at least ask your brother what he has already done, what he has in place because maybe he's got this all covered and a little vacation south of the border to help out would be great fun.

Good luck!
