I'm doing some research on this route for an article and future trip and was wondering if anyone has done any real boondocking along the highway? Practically the entire route goes through BLM land and the Dixie National Forest so it should be doable.

A couple of years ago I boondocked in the Dixie National Forest in the Boulder Mountain area. Entered from the Northwest near Teasdale on UT-24 not off of UT-12. Lots of small mountain lakes in the area.
As I'm sure you know, things are changing in the boondocking world. If you have not found it, here is a link to the Motor Vehicle Use Maps for the Dixie National Forest. From what I'm reading so far dispersed camping is allowed within 150ft of the open roads.
Safe travels!

We've boondocked in the Grand Staircase/Escalante NM down the Hole-in-the-Rock road. From what I understand, a free backcountry permit is now required for car camping in the NM. The BLM website lists suggested boondocking locations.

Along the east fork of the Sever River (East Fork Rd. about 3 miles west of the Bryce Canyon entrance) are several places to boondock. There is also a national forest campground (King Creek Campground near Tropic Res.)

Excellent, thanks everyone. It's always best to get input from those who've actually boondocked in the area to get the real scoop. I've driven the area once but was unable to do any real camping as we were on a tight schedule.

We didn't boondock when we went thro' a few years back, but we did stay at two National Forest campgrounds, both of which are dry-camping and quite nice.
Stayed at Red Canyon (on Bryce side $15/night -> Pics and info HERE) and Singletree (on Torrey side $10/night -> Pics & info HERE). The NF sites are half price w/ senior pass.

Mike,
You also might want to take a look at the Bull Mountain Road Scenic Backway and Lonesome Beaver campground:

Unfortunately for us, probably many of these outstanding boondocking areas are probably unreachable in our small Class C - but certainly doable in your TC (I think).
P.S. Is your truck a 4X4?

About midway between Grove and Boulder there's a visitor center on the W side of the hwy. About 1/4 mile or 1/2 mile south of it, look for a trail going E. I spent the night there in summer 2010 (the gent at the center recommended it). The trail goes about 100 yards and takes you to a cliff where you can see the whole valley floor, miles and miles. You're under big trees and road noise is pretty well muffled even halfway back. From there you can always scout for a different spot if you like.
I walked for about an hour in the woods around there and saw several old grassy two-tracks.

Just off of 12 on Hole in the Rock Road near Escalante is a large area where a lot of RVer's who want to explore the slot canyons of Escalante Grand Staircase dry camp.
