Down side...

-Weak cell service.
-Cost, unless you have one of those unlimited plans
-Reliable. Unless your sitting right next to a cell tower there is a very good chance you will get bumped from the tower and loose what you were watching at some point in the night.

Your idea will work, you'll just have to deal with those when they come up.

I'd recommend getting a cell phone amplifier, then you won't have to worry much.

Cell phone amplifier, great idea! Thanks

ATT U-verse is what they are putting in my neighborhood.....I am getting the internet and phone line.....not the TV service.......I am keeping Dish network so I can continue to have Sat service while camping......

Get your sling adapter and start playing with it......

It would seem to me that the weak link would be either the cellular service in a remote campground, or WiFi network bandwidth overloaded in a, RV park/campground. I know that every campground we stayed at this summer except for one had poor WiFi coverage and only one had marginal cell service for us (Sprint).

There is no Wifi involved in what the OP is wanting to do.... only cell service......if you are in a 4g area......it works great!

I think this would be a great alternative to satellite dish. Will it work with an iPhone and 3G service? Is the slingbox connected by HDMI to the HD cable box? My home internet is pretty fast, but you can't predict what you may get in a campground. Can I connect mu iPhone directly to my TV via the HDMI TV input? Should I get the HD or regular version?

I'm totally new to Slingbox but very intrigued.

If you Slingbox your home DirecTV DVR to your RV, how do you change channels or can you? Can you record and watch recorded programs from your DVR?

First off.........I don't know if you can use a sling box on a Direct TV DVR....I know Sling is owned by Dish Network......again, I'm not saying you can not......I am saying......I don't know......since I have Dish Network.....

you can change channels of the DVR using the menu that is provided on the phone.......yes, you can watch programs that are on the DVR or live TV....and you can record programs to the DVR using the software that is in the sling APP......

A couple of weeks ago on a Friday night, after we arrived at our campground...I watched an hour long episode of Gold Rush Alaska that was recorded on my DVR at home...after I crawled into bed that night...I propped the phone up on my nightstand and used my bluetooth earphones for the sound.....very cool!
