Do you reserve a spot at a park to stay a night and then get up and go again for a long trip? Most of my trips will most likely be a days drive, but as I become more experienced it could be several days of traveling to get to the main destination.
that is exactly what I do. plan ahead based on my streets and trips program, or actually my trailer life DVD trip planner, and calculate about 250-300 miles between stops. I enter a bunch of way points to find a campground at my desired stopping location.

I also stole this a long time ago. It works for us...YMMV.

I try to drive till 2-3PM and call it a day. (Start early)
If there's little traffic and I get an early start... I get close to 400 miles.
Most of the time I'll average 300-350 miles a day if I'm traveling
Interstate Highways. Less on 2 lane Blacktop...
If a driver plans to average 66 MPH. he better factor in Fuel stops, and Meal time, Bath room breaks ect... I generally leave very early and drive further on day #1,than other days...

X2 on 300 miles before stop. Why beat your self up... We will stop for lunch and like to get to a camp spot before dark to get half way setup while there is still daylight...
There are always exceptions but this is the general rule for us...

How many people make reservations for stoping on the interstate? I aways have reservations for where I am going to be but on the way I just wing it. Never have had a problem getting a spot with no notice. This way I can drive a little more on that first day if we aren't tired. Worse cawe there is always the Walmart parking for overnight. We have no pets are kids so its easy jsut to pull over and get some sleep.

+1 You never know what circunstances will come up that may influnence you leave time or trip. We have made resevations trying to plan out the day but it always seems like we either got a late start or made better time than we thought we would and would've like to drive further but needed to stop because of the reserved site. So we wing it on the way to and back but our destination will be reserved.

This works for us also. We got in the habit of leaving ay 4:AM so we could get thru Atlanta before 6:AM. Then we found that we liked getting to the destination early, even if we didn't go thru Atlanta

When I am doing big trips, like when I went out west 1800 miles one way, I plan on 650 miles in 12 hours. I'll start at 3:00 in the morning, travel until 3:00 in the afternoon. Momma and the kids usually sleep until 9:00 ±, when we'll stop for a quick breakfast. Another quick stop for lunch and we arrrive about 3:00. Kids and Momma can go swimming and do whatever until 11:00 or 12:00 at night. I usually go to sleep about 8:00 and get up, family gets in the car at 3:00 a.m. and hit the road again. About 3 days max is all I would do like this without a day or two break. On the other hand, a one day trip of 600 or 700 miles is certainly doable, same as before I always leave so I can arrive about 3:00 in the afternoon. (650 miles in 12 hrs is based on interstate travel, other types of roads will be less miles same hours).

We make at least one trip to the Gulf coast a year from out here in west Texas. We are 650 miles from out favorite hang out on the coast. We leave early in the morning but hit the west side of San Antonio around 3-4 pm. We have been on the road for around 6 - 7 hours (330 miles) and even with a fuel and lunch stop I am by now not at my peak. For me there is no way I would tow a camper and fight traffic through San Antonio without a good nights sleep.

Driving 600 miles in a day sounds awful to me. We stick to about 300-350 if we're towing because it's just so tiring, much more than just driving the truck solo. Only once have we pushed it farther, when we absolutley had to make it from point A to point B in one day. And believe me, it wasn't pretty. All 4 of us were utterly whipped. it took us almost 2 days just to recover!
Now that the kids are no longer camping with us we have the leisure to go as fast or slow as we want. My preference is to get up early and hit the road by 8am. We don't usually eat in restaurants when we're towing, so we can just stop pretty much anywhere and fix a bite, then get back on the road within 40 minutes. Or if DH needs some rest, we can make that happen, too. Along about 3pm I start looking ahead for potential places to roost. We make our reservations over the phone. When the kids traveled with us, i didn't feel comfortable pulling off at Walmart or truck stops or casinos for an overnight. But now that it's just the two of us, I would probably be fine with that. Regardless, i want to be OFF THE ROAD by 6pm, at the latest.

It also depends on the time of the year. I want to get into a campground before dark if at all possible in order to get backed in and set up. In the winter time, that shortens driving time greatly.
Last year I drove from Houston to Atlanta - 850 miles. Going out I broke it into 3 days, mainly because I was visiting a friend in AL. Coming back I drove it in 2 days and drove over a little over halfway the first day. It was doable but a lot more of pushing through - and it still took about 10 hours just because of the stops for gas.
