Rocmoc...it is not yet open....hopefully by the end of 2012!

We had friends arrive today who did the Devil's Backbone, they said it was on their bucket list. Had no problems with their 5th wheel but did have to back up twice for a semi around a curve. They loved it. Their personal observation is that the new road is far far from being ready.

Did it one year from the Durango side to Maz. Very interesting. Probably was a beautiful drive, but I didn't dare take my eyes off what road was in front of me. As I remember, there was only one spot where we could pull off the road for a break. Forget the name of the village we came to after the worst part of the drive, but had no brakes and it was still downhill! Managed to stop and was the instant attraction of the day. Fortunately there was a parts store and a mechanic available. On our way in an hour at the cost of $10--lots of smiles. We have always been willingly helped whenever a problem popped up in our Mexican travels. The new highway will be great.

There is a lot more online if you search "Baluarte"

We've done the Devil's Backbone 7 1/2 round trips since the late 90's towing a 27 foot travel trailer. Mexico 40 has improved greatly since 1998, fog lines, curves moderated, and some of the sharpest curves cut back a little. We never had to back up for an oncoming tractor trailer, always managing to miss them by a whisker.
It's risky business taking the quota since it's the Mexican custom not to mark or announce the last exit prior to the end of the new road. Twice we have been tooling along on the new quota at 65 or so and found the end of the road marked with a fence or a large pile of gravel. One time, west of Durango we had to bribe a night watchman with cold beer to open the gate so we could turn the truck and trailer around beyond the gate.
From the linked site I assume that the bridge is not yet completed. Last time we passed thru in 2007 there was a lot of tunnel and road work yet to be completed on the western end.
My bucket list is to ride the old backbone on a motorcycle.

Mazatlan just might get more than they want when the bridge opens. There was an article in one of the Mexican papers 2 years ago talking about the Marijuana growing in that area. The cartels control the entire district and they will not be happy with the new bridge. But it will be much easier for them to travel to Maz and do their dirty deeds. I would not be shocked if they tried to blow up that bridge. However I do want to try it out!
