We're at Sulphur Springs on I30 going to Abilene on I20. Is it best to go straight through the middle of Dallas and Fort Worth on the I30, or at Mesquite drop down on the I835 to the I20 and go round the bottom of these two cities ?

Definitely go around the bottom. And do not do it during rush hours, 7-9 am/4-6 pm. 10 am to 2 pm would be best. Weekend would be even better.

Dallas or Fort Worth can and will be a mess, I have never been threw their that I didn't get shoved off somewhere that I didn't want to go, if you can go around by all means do it, even if it is a hundred miles further, ,,,,,,

I'd go I30 to Greenville, then 380 to Jacksboro and 281 to I20, unless you need something in the immediate DFW area. I haven't been on 380 in several years and it's gonna have a bunch of red lights, but it's way more casual than the I30/I35/I45/central expressway meetings.
But to answer your question, I20 along the South of DFW would be my pick.

we always take I-30 to Greenville, then 380 to Jacksboro. I20 is a mess during rush hour. Everyone has BIG trucks and they go 90 miles an hour!! LOL

Suggest not taking US380, massive construction in McKinney at US75

Highly recommend I-30, I-635 South to I-20 and I-20 across south-side of Dallas and Ft. Worth. Once past downtown FTW it's smooth sailing.

This is probably the easist way across the DFW Metro Mess.

The construction that tied up traffic on US 380 at US 75 in McKinney was completed earlier this year and the traffic flows smoothly there now. But the huge number of traffic lights on 380 from east of McKinney to the west side of Denton makes me still recommend going I-20 around the south of D/FW. Hard to get up any speed before having to stop for the next red light. 30+ lights in that 30+ miles.

Agree! We live on the west side of Denton and with the coach will either go north and take 82 from Gainesville or south to 287/I20 to head east from here.

Thanks for all the replies. However, it being 11am, and never having seen the downtown buildings, we opted for straight through the middle. Yikes ! What a madhouse, needed eyes in the back of my head ! We got through with no problem, but an accident on the East going side, and the associated traffic jam, convinced us we were lucky and would never do this again !

All things considered, we'd use the southern route. I hate traffic lights !

Thanks again.

Best I can say is that you're darn lucky. That area where I-35E comes in from the north and your transition to I-30 westbound is a miracle that you made it at all.

The traffic that you witnessed is that way 22/7. The only slack is between 2:30AM and 4AM.

That area of downtown isn't called the "canyon" without reason.
