Every story I have seen on the incident, most originating with the Associated Press (AP) contains this quote,

It has been legal for people to take loaded firearms into Mount Rainier since 2010, when a controversial federal law went into effect that made possession of firearms in national parks subject to state gun laws.

How in the world is this germane to what happened? This criminal had a carload of weapons, ammunition, and even ballistic vests. This man was going to have guns with him no matter what the law said.

The main stream media just can't resist the temptation to politicize everything...even the tragic death of a Federal Peace Officer.

It's not germane but the media is operating from ignorance. He was already breaking the law when he got into the car with a loaded rifle. That is illegal ANYWHERE in Washington State....not to mention the previous shooting being illegal.

The going theory is he was going to the park to hide after being involved in another shooting New Years Eve. He blew through a tire chain check point which set the Rangers after him. He is on foot now and being tracked in the snow. They also have an aircraft with IR gear looking for him.

Pretty dumb thing for a guy on the lam to do. He will probably do more dumb stuff and get caught or shot.

Very sad. And a short time ago, the shooter was in Iraq protecting our freedom. Now he is ruining lives.

Its hard to imagine that a park ranger would get involved in a situation that involved this kind of violence. Like said above their prime function is to promote the Natl Forest and the great outdoor lifestyle we all still get to enjoy.

You ocassionally hear of being attacked by Bears or Cougars and sometimes being run over by a flock of runaway Wild Turkeys but not a "shootout at OK Corral".

Every Park Ranger I have met has been the very best even to the point that I have said many of times "Wish I had a job like this". Of recent times up on the Blue Ridge Parkway a Lady Park Ranger pulls up and gets out of her car and came over to our TENT SETUP. Of course we are thinking what have we done now. She said she was just driving around and visiting with the people. We had an excellent visit with her for almost an hour - She was interested in how we setup our campsite and even took pictures to post on their local bulletin boards. We wow'd her with our full rug inside the 3-room tent and the beds up off the floor with air mattress inserts along with nitestand and table etc.. She said that explains the Jeep with large trailer outside...

Thoughts and prayers with the Park Ranger family.

I agree this is a true tragedy. What in the world gets into a young mans head that would trigger such an outburst of violence.
I also agree with the poster that brought up the point where the Media had made reference to gun laws in the park. I can assure them that this incident had nothing to do with it and that the only point of bringing it up would be to promote their own ( medias ) agenda. Do they think he was running to where anything he was doing was legal.

Actually, the NPS has Park Rangers and Law Enforcement or LE Rangers. They attend Federal Law Enforcement Training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Brunswick, GA.

They are armed, unlike Park Rangers, and have authority to affect arrests, issue citations, etc.

LE Rangers do provide a dual function. I have seen LE Rangers change tires in remote areas for older folks, provide some interp, answer visitor questions. Their primary function is Law Enforcement.

The NPS has Rangers that are primarily historians, fee collectors, interpretation, suupervisory, superintendents, etc.

Lest we forget,,,LE Ranger Margaret Anderson died protecting and preserving,,,

while her Ranger Husband was working elsewhere in the Park.

They all are good folks.

So SAD! And with a young family, believing they had a great job with many benefits. I give her and her family much sincere empathy. Was the gunman having flashbacks or his mind still stuck in the Iraq war. Never know what goes on in ones head. Yes A grizzly would be his best encounter, if he his not killed by LEO's, they will have to have a very cool attitude; not too do so. after such a horrific tragedy. Again; Family and relatives and friends of this Ranger; My deepest Condolences! Irover
