VERY HIGH WINDS EXPECTED IN THIS AREA for 1 Jan 2012

Questions:

1. What maximum wind speed would be safe for our rig ?

2. Would you head for Detroit on 401 or via Sarnia on 402 ?

Thanks

I would wait it out. Blowing snow and icy roads make driving absolutely miserable.

Winds are going to be out of the WSW at 31 with higher gusts over here in MI. They are calling for wind, rain, and snow till Monday evening. That's going to be pretty much a head wind for you.

1. What maximum wind speed would be safe for our rig ?

We generally will go in wind gusts up to 50 MPH. But we have a larger rig.

2. Would you head for Detroit on 401 or via Sarnia on 402 ?

Depends if your going west on I-69 I'd take the 402 to Sarnia then get on I69 right there.

Sarnia?
Never travel to Sarnia when there is snow and especially winds as well!!!

It is an isolated drive from the 401.
People have been stranded for days.

I know you are probably anxious to get going, but wait out the storm.
You will get there faster, safer and less stressed!

Worth the wait!

My opinion (from experience).

WeatherCanada site is showing 60kmh winds in the London area all day tomorrow. In the summertime that would be a small challenge, depending on your unit, but in the winter when it is picking up snow, that's a Wait for another day. Both the 401 (Woodstock to Windsor) and 402 have had times when closed completely for days.
The weather on Monday looks much better.

As for 401 or 402, IMHO it would depend on your route past Detroit. If going south on I-75, we take the 401. If going west on I-94 to Chicago etc, or south on I-69 towards Indy, then we take the 402 and I-69.

Have a safe and enjoyable trip.

Left Toronto at 8am. Went on 401 to Detroit (based on advice from this forum - THANKS VERY MUCH to all). Weather great for 2 hours, then periods of 20 minutes of absolute pouring rain, followed by 20 to 30 minutes of OKish weather. Road surface good all the way. Wind steadily increasing as we went, but mostly just off the nose. Reese sway bars terrific. Went through US customs OK. Decided to stop in Monroe as we needed to shop and organize air card account with Verizon.

Now parked in Walmart car park with vehicle nose pointed into the wind, which is now about 50-60kph.

Should get better as we now go South.

Thanks again for opinions.

We were planing to leave Waterloo Ontario on January 3 taking the 401 to the I 75 heading for the RGV. But it is so cold and nasty here monday AM I don't want to bring the RV home from storage to load to-day. Now if the weather turns out the way they predict we will load up Wednesday and leave Thursday. I keep saying that is the good thing about being retired you don't have to travel in bad weather but I'm getting restless.
