Caprock Canyon State Park is a bit closer than Palo Duro and almost as scenic.
but it's more than an hour's drive, I think.

Excellent option and it is one of the places we intend to visit in 2012. Home of the Texas Bison Herd.

Tyler State Park is our favorite within 2 hours of Ft. Worth (we live on the SW side of Ft. Worth). If you want to stay within one hour, Dinosaur Valley & Lake Mineral Wells are nice with some good trails.

We really enjoy cedar hill SP. it has great biking, boating, and hiking. one of the best "close to the city" parks around. They just opened somewhere around 100 or so new full hookup 50amp sites a few months ago.

We were in college station to visit last week and stopped at Lake Sommerville. They only had one camping loop open and only a few in that one. The restrooms were small but ok for the few campers. The lake was unbelievably low!! We where running late and did not get to check out the hikes. There is one that goes quite a way to the other half of the park. We went to the north side park, Birch Unit, I think it was. The trail goes all the way to the south side unit, Nails Unit,

It is surprising how much warmer it is down there but it would be at least 3 hours from Ft. Worth. It took us 3 1/2 from Dallas not towing.

A park within a couple hours south would be Dinasour Valley and west would be Mineral Wells. I'd suggest Johnson Branch at Ray Roberts for his first towing experience because it is closer and the sites are larger and, therefore, easier to get backed into. You want his first experience to be as enjoyable and stress free as possible!

Find a site tucked into the trees to protect them from the cold wind and it won't be too bad.

You are facing the most daunting question that a Texan has to make.

There are SO MANY good places to go in your rv, it is really hard to make up ones mind aint it?

I just spent 5 days at Cedar Hill State Park and it was wonderful. The sewer sites are a bit close to each other but there weren't too many people camping last week. The hiking trails are good and the staff is helpful.

How about somewhere around Lake Whitney? Lake Whitney SP or there are other private parks up there. I personally have not been to Lake Whitney SP, but have heard some good things.

Close to Ft. Worth is Loyd Park, which is operated by the city of Grand Prairie. From I-20, take hwy 360 bout 5 miles south. Very nice with plenty of camp sites, playgrounds, Joe Pool lake, and close to shopping, restaurants, and entertainment.

Lake Mineral Wells or Ray Roberts (Johnson Branch Unit) both within an hour of Ft. Worth.
