We love our Porta Chef. It gets hot enough to really sear the outside of a 1 1/2 inch thick steak or lamb loin chops and leave it rare inside.

If you don't like thick rare steaks, that is not as important, though.

Amen. I have mentioned the Porta Chef in several threads on this topic and they always got obliterated by "Weber mania". Glad to see someone else sees the logic in a high quality Canadian made cast aluminum 14000 BTU fully portable BBQ at close to half the price of an equivalent Weber Q. And it comes with legs too.

The legs are not the grill's best feature. Being tapered, they get jammed in the tapered sockets and can be a bear to remove. I deburred, polished and even waxed, to no avail. Heat expands the aluminum and the steel settles in deeper and becomes very tight when things cool down.

The sockets in the casting are a little thin, too. If the wind, a dog or grandkid knocks the grill over, the leg sockets will probably crack. Mine did.

I guess I still have water in my blood. I like my Magma marine grill. It took some adapting but I have multiple mounts, even one that uses the reciever hitch, none of them require the use of a picnic table top.

Bill.... the legs on my Porta Chef are not tapered. I haven't had a problem with them yet. I even added a rotiserie with a home made rear burner to mine, does as good a job on two chickens as my full size Broil King at home.

After many years of using the portable propane grill, I retired mine and went with a Hibatchi grill.

Had them all. The weber Q series propane grill is my favorite. Good even heat. cleans up nice. good heavy parts. coustomer service is excelent. I ordered my from the local sears/craftsman store. that was a year ago. before that I had a "grill to go" not inpressed at all. It now has a home at the local land fill.

The weber is a bit pricy but you get what you pay for.

For years we used those little rectangular tab;e top propane grill you can pick up on sale for $20. Took forever to heat up but eventually got the job done.

This year I couldn't find it and took the Frontgate stainless steel infrared grill given to us. It's a pain to clean so we never use it. After using it, I can tell you that I'll never go back to a regular propane grill again. It heats up in minutes and we never needed to use the high setting.

Try "Overstock.com". Our daughter and son bought us a Weber Q220 from there at what I understood was a very good price. It was a 70th birthday gift for me in late September, so we haven't used it yet. I'm still debating whether to put a quick-release hook up in the MH propane system (high pressure side) and have the Weber regulator plug into it with an extension to the grill, or to carry a 20-lb. bottle for it. I'd put a retaining ring for the bottle in one of the cargo bays if I go that route.

Had one....it was a good BBQ, until something needed replacing, than it was no better than the $20 Canadian Tire Special....Weber on the other hand makes replacement parts readily available for all their products. No different than my full size at home....i used to spend 1/2 of what a Weber was worth on other brands, and within a few years they were at the end of the driveway waiting for the junk collector. So, i decided to buy a Weber, and i will never regret spending the extra...for something that will last
