We went down through north-central Florida today, Ocala to south of Clermont, for the first time in several years.

Don't think about it, don't even give it a moment's though. The area was a monumental pain. Lots of traffic and every light was red, and there were lots of them.

Next spring we'll be going a ways out of our way either west or east to avoid that mess. The outrageous rampant development in that area has created a huge bottleneck.

We came down that way just after Thanksgiving and didn't find it too bad at all. We were able to catch nearly every light as green by staying just 1-3 mph below the speed limit. Maybe it was the time of day we traveled or maybe it was heavier traffic now that Christmas shoppers are out and about. We traveled from Ocala to I-4 on US 27. I do agree that it is significantly more developed than it was the last time we were in the area a couple years ago.

You do realize that we have a turnpike that's literally visible from many stretches of US27 following that route, don't you?

It is better to stay on I-75 to Wildwood, exit on Hwy 44 and go to 27. We got caught in the traffic at the Villages last year, never again.

And Clermont to Lake Wales is bad too.

There must be an empty place with good camping where all these people came from.

Umm..yeah, but this old rustbucket isn't about to go that fast very comfortably.

We did notice that every shopping center parking lot was chockfull. Seemed like there was far less traffic when we went north that way last March.

Turnpike tolls arte outrageous for RVs. They just count axles. I pay the same as a fully loaded semi.

You could stay on I-75 and catch US 98 to US 27 at Lake Wales. Lakeland is a bit of a pain but the rest is pretty clear sailing. I usually take the Turnpike to US 27 to avoid all that mess south of Ocala. Fla 44 through Leesburg is an alternative, but I thought it was a real pain too. Hopefully, the construction through Clermont is just about done. When I came through there in November, all the lanes were open, and I made it right through with no issues. They were just mainly working on the turn lanes. Right now, you have lots of lights and lots of retirees, which happily I'm one of em'.
