I could not find a change interval for my axle gear oil in the Freightliner manual.
I am changing the axle oil regardless because I doubt it has been done before. At least it wasn't in their records.
But I am curious what interval is actually recomended.
Does anybody know this?

Gear oil replacement really depends on the amount of heat cycles your diff has seen, loads put on it,mileage etc.I would take a educated guess at 50K miles being a reasonable expectation.I se above the guy says every 2 years? For what reason?what does 2 years mean?Nothing to me.I base all my oil changes no matter what on type of usage and mileage,Never on time

I was told that Rear end Gear Oil never wears out or even gets Dirty, so unless there is a problem or there has been some leakage it really isn't necessary to Change it .I can't ever recall ever having a Rear End problem in any of the Vehicles that I have owned over the last 50 Years. Some of them were late 1930 and early 1940 Models.

It depends on which axle you have. Call Freightliner, and give them the last six digits of your VIN. They will be able to tell you which differential you have on that chassis. Then ask them about the required maintenance for that axle. 800-385-4357

If memory serves I think my service manual says every 150k miles but I have been changing it every four years. It is a 2003, I changed it in 2007 when the wife and I purchased it and then this past spring I changed it for the second time.

Looked fine but then I have only put ~30k on it in the four years we have owned it.

I figured for a service that is as easy as this and not too much $$ it is a no brainer to do it at least every 50k to 100k miles.
Especially if you consider the cost of a R/P repair in an axle as big as these.

My manual for Freightliner chassis XCL,XCR,XCP,XCS,& MC calls for initial change at 6 mths. or 6,000, at 12 mths. or 12,000, and 24 mths or 24,000 miles thereafter. I have this in a PDF file if you need it.

My owner's manual calls for every two years. Good enough reason for me. This is a popular topic on my Foretravel forum, and the consensus is to follow the manufacturer's advice unless using synthetic.

Don't you guys think the repair manual change intervals were written primarily for the dealers' benefit- to keep them profitable. I'm of the opinion that the "once a year" interval was intended as a rip-off.
