A few days ago I sold a shotgun barrel to a person in another town. He sent me a Money Gram issued by Walmart. When I tried to cash it at a Walmart they required photo id. No problem. But they also required my Social Security number. It didn't happen and won't either.
Now my wife when buying groceries from Kroger stores and writing a personal check for the price of the groceries. no extra cash requested. Is being required to give them her social security number.
Also not going to happen.
In this day of identity theft a person needs to protect their identity from thieves, and especially when a SS number does nothing to prove who you are. They don't require that a person produce a card just a SS number.
Of coarse the stores say they will not make that number available to any other party. How stupid can they be, or how stupid do they think the public is. It's pretty much common knowledge that certain people hire into large corporations just to steal personal info to sell to other thieves.
Myself and my family and friends are going to boyctt corporations who employ this unnessasary requirement to buy by check and I ask others to do as well. This sort of practice has to be shutdown immediatly.

First I have ever heard of it but should not be required to cash a check or whatever...one piece of ID (or sometimes two) should suffice

Usually require "picture id" which can include military ID, but not ssn.
I would ask to speak to the manager, as the first thing I thought of was "selling SS Numbers" for black market sales.
I did ask for SSN when we were doing background checks, and was told by an immigrant that it should be ok as they had just bought theirs at the next town over (which didn't have a soc sec office).
Maybe the store managers of these places do not know that this is being done by their employees.

You can get a social security number pretty easily, I have no idea why they'd require the SSN for cashing a check. Seems a bit fishy to me, did you contact their manager\district manager?

Don't see why anyone still pays with a check. Much better and safer to use your bank issued check card. Using a paper check gives anyone who handles it all the account info needed to do an online transaction from your checking account.

A few people boycotting won't change much with a big corporation. Call your local TV station and talk to whoever does consumer reports, product testing etc. Make a stink and make it public.
I would make a point of going back to the store and speaking to the Manager, if no satisfaction, ask to speak to the district manager and on up the ladder. Personally, if I was along the DW would have left for the car because she knows it was going to get ugly with a request/demand like that from anybody.
