We are in Rockport and are off to see the Alamo and do the River Walk in San Antonio for a few days.
What would be your campround recommendations for our 35' motorhome and towed car? And any other must-see attractions and restaurants greatfully appreciated!
Thanks

We stayed at Travelers World which is the closest CG to The ALamo and Riverwalk. It is 3 miles from downtown with the city bus at its doorstep. The current PA rates are $20.00 to $21.50 a night. We were there a few days and it was nice and well maintained in 2008. They probably have a website or check them out on the PA website. They do tell you not to follow GPS or Mapquest as there is a low bridge and steep RR crossing on those directions. Hope this helps.

Don, we have been to the Alamo a few times. If you have never been you may be surprised to find it surrounded by High rise buildings and lots of city traffic. I am a bit of an “Old time Buff” and mentioned this to one of the tour guides at the Alamo. He turned me on to a place called Brackettville, TX. Brackettville is about 100 miles West of San Antonio on 90 Hwy. This where the full stage set is that has been used in most of the Alamo films. Since the battle at the Alamo caused some fires and blowing things up the stage set is not repaired until the next time someone wants to make a film, but it is a very interesting authentic place to spend the day. Right beside the set is a full replica of an old ghost town also used as a movie set and this is all way out in the country so you do get the full effect of what it may have been like back then. Fort Clark Springs campground is less than a mile from the set and right on 90 Hwy. Nice place to stay and it has its own history.

I recommend Alamo Fiesta RV Resort just West of SA on IH 10 at the Boerne, Tx exit. Easy on and off, great people and it's only about 30 minutes max to downtown San Antonio. Easy parking 1 block from River Walk and 3 blocks to The Alamo. Catch the trolley buses, ride all day, see everything for 1 price, on and off as you want, El Mercado, some of the Missions, Governors mansion.
Boerne is a nice little shopping town...your about 30-40 minutes from Fredericksburg in the hill country, good shopping,, great German food, middle of the Texas wine country, Admiral Nimitz Museum.
And lots more.

This is a neat place also, but they had major fire damage this summer from wild fires... don't know what the status is at this time. Being in a MH with your toad,, it would not be a bad trip from Boerne also.

There are not many "campgrounds" that are REAL close to SA but one that is about 25 miles away is Canyon Lake, Potters Creek. Has paved sites, water and electric with several dump stations. There are standard 14 day sites and an area for long term camping. It's located about half way between SA and Austin so it's a good place to visit both cities. Most enjoy the herds of deer roaming the campgrounds looking for a hand out. It's a very clean, well kept campground with just about any type of service you could want within about 10 miles. If you want to stay much closer you would need to settle for an RV park.

I suggest you go to the KOA (my god, am I saying this?), as it is the closest and handiest to the river walk and Alamo. They are also the cheapest when you compare them to Travelers word, etc. Catch the bus at the door of the park and ride anywhere, especially down to the river walk etc. You cannot go wrong with this park.

I hear ya on the KOA(Keep On Adding). But that is exactly where I stayed when I was at the Alamo. We did use the bus (Right out front) and it saved parking fees downtown. So the costs were about a wash.
