Dodge 3500 Ram Van Cruise Control Help Needed

Our 2001 Pleasure-way on a Dodge 3500 Van chassis with 5.9 L, ( 360 CI ) V8 has recently started having intermittent cruise control operation. Cruise control either works great or not at all. I don’t think it is a fuse or circuit breaker problem, but I can’t find a fuse listing for cruise control. On a trip with-in the last two weeks on our way home from Palm Desert it worked great to Parker AZ and four days later on our drive to Las Vegas. From Las Vegas, 300 miles to home it would not work at all.

I downloaded 8 diagrams on the 2002 Dodge 3500 Ram Van from the PW Yahoo forum. I have gone thru them and the only possible reference I found about Cruise Control was on diagram Fig 21: Ground Dist Circuit on page 1 of 2. It shows the ground point of the Speed Control Servo as near the right front fender. Is this Servo for Cruise Control?

Any suggestions or help you can offer will be appreciated.
Regards,
Dick

ISTR something being posted here long, long ago about a failing rear axle speed sensor causing the cruise control to malfunction on the Ram van. But I may be misremembering, and I think there were associated problems that would pin it down to that. But I'd at least check the connector there for tightness. It's located somewhere on the 'pumpkin' (differential housing); top front, maybe.

If I'm right, there may be something elsewhere on the web, so some googling might return some hits. Try 'Dodge van + cruise control' and similar terms.

I agree with Handbasket about the speed sensor. I had a '97 and a '99 Ram van and bothe had problems with the speed sensor. Cruise would kick in and out and speedometer would start bouncing. You can try pulling out the sensor and cleaning it. They collect the metal shavings from the gears and bearings since they are nothing but a coil of wire with a magnet down the center. Also you might want to clean the one in the tail of the transmission.

I don't know much about cruise controls, but our '96 Dodge 318 cu. in. developed a vacuum leak which caused a similar malfunction. Once that was repaired, it was OK.

Some public libraries have vehicle repair manuals like Chiltons, etc. You can sometimes get a pretty good idea of the process to follow in diagnosing a problem like this from those books. Another option is to subscribe to All Data for the vehicle in question. This is the repair data base that many professional mechanics use. I think it is about $30 a year to subscribe for on line access for one vehicle. Here is a link to it.

My 2003 Ram van cruise quit working. Also had some problems with the heater dampers not working properly. Problem was a vacuum hose off a control behind the Right headlight. Simple to check and fix. Just pull up the tabs that hold the headlight in place to remove light.
