Something my DW just read on another forum, I'm not so sure it's a good idea, thought I'd ask for your opinions. Thanks, Jack
To prolong the life of a laptop battery, would it be a good idea to remove it from the laptop when fully charged, leave it in storage, and then run the computer plugged-in to 115vac?

There are a lot of google hits on this. Not sure if yours is among them.

Not a good idea. The overall life of the battery pack would not be affected.

prolong it by NOT using it

Sorry...my question was not very clear. I'm sure the battery would last longer sitting on a shelf, but is it harmful to the laptop to operate only on AC without the battery installed?

On DW's last laptop, she had it plugged in about 90% of the time we were home. It "only" last 4 1/2 yrs. "They" say it's better to run it on batery down to 10 percent or so then plug in to recharge (even while in use). That's what she is now doing with her new one.

It will not harm the laptop to operate it without the battery being installed.
Store the battery in a cool location but don't forget about it. Every two or three months install it in the laptop and run it down to less than 25%, charge it back up and store again. The battery will self discharge in storage. If you forget about it and let it go all the way down it may not charge when reconnected.
The first few times you reinstall the battery to recharge it note the charge state.

A few years ago I bought a new 18v drill and stopped using the 12v one. One year later the 12v was completely dead and could not be recharged. I have since learned all re-chargable batteries have to go through a recharge cycle once in a while, every 2-3 months.

I suspect that method would be preferable to simply allowing it to charge day after day and hour after hour while it's running plugged in. Seems like a BETTER plan would be to unplug frequently and allow the battery to exercise by being used. I have no evidence that one way is better than another though. I have experienced leaving them plugged in constantly and the battery starts having less and less durability when it US used. Two year old Gateway got to where it only had about a half hours use on battery power (down from two and a half hours).

All rechargeable batteries have a limit to the number of Discharge/recharge cycles that they can take. We leave the battery in the portable and do not hook up the ac until it gets down to 10 or so percent. What harms it more is having both battery and ac hooked up as when you are using the computer it will discharge and recharge continuously. A lot of this is what brought about change in batteries because the older batteries would develop a memory and then would not last as long. New battery designs have helped but nothing lasts forever. I have heard some people say that you could take the battery out but do discharge/recharge from time to time.
