Not true! MANY older manual transmissions lube the upper end with splash/spray from the cluster gear. The cluster gear is meshed with the input shaft. It only turns when the engine is running, and the clutch is engaged. With the engine off, and the transmission in Neutral, the mainshaft center bearings, the rear output bearing, and the rear output seal will get NO lubrication!
Such transmissions require a driveshaft disconnect for four down towing.

How old is "older"? Remco lists the towing specs for some makes/models back into the 60's.

So true!!! and about 30miles down the road the bearing becomes part of the output shaft

Mower...
In 1956, I put a Olds V8 and LaSalle 3 speed transmission into a Ford '32 5-window coupe and pulled it hundreds of miles to drag strips all over the mid-west.
Since 1960, I have built, drag raced, auto-crossed, and tracked over 30 street rods and race cars towing them all over the country. Not only have I never damaged a transmission from towing, but of the HUNDREDS of guys I know, I have never even heard of anybody damaging a manual transmission by towing it.
I recently spent a week at the Bonnevile Salt Flats and saw cars towed from all over the USA being run at speeds of 200-300 MPH without transmission damage.
Can you give me a credible example of a manual transmission that HAS BEEN damaged from towing as you say?

Specifically, what manual transmission is that?

Well, yes, actually, I can cite examples:
When I was a mechanic on industrial rolling stock, I rebuilt many T-86 three speed transmissions that were damaged by being pushed or towed around the plant when the engine wouldn't start. The output shaft bearings were pitted and galled.
I once rebuilt the top-load transmission in a 1939 Ford for a friend who had towed it many miles. The output shaft bearing was destroyed. It is VERY difficult to disconnect the driveshaft when it is a torque-tube shaft!
I have known many racers who would put a street elbow in the filler hole, then fill the transmission to the top of the elbow. This would raise the fluid level just enough so the rear bearing was about 1/4 to 1/2 inch submerged in oil. Just enough to nicely lube it! Of course, the tranny had a tendency to leak and slobber the excess oil, but it kept the bearings lubed!
