We brush the Dogs teeth every morning with Dog/Pet Toothpaste. This helps a lot.Just do some research on what you give your dog, you may be surprised what can harm them?

Talk to your vet. There are veterinary plaque removal products out there. We've used Clenzadent by Sogival and also Perio-Support by VetriSciences. Both are powders that you top dress dry or wet food with. Both help with breath and plaque buildup. Clenzadent is cheaper and the dosage is teeny-tiny compared to the 1 tsp dosage of Perio-Support.

Dental health is very important to the overall health of your dog. Bacteria/infection in the mouth can actually have serious consiquences to other organ function, like the liver, kidneys and heart.

Our dogs' breaths can't possibly be related to what they eat.

Raw bones and chew hooves do help keep our dogs' teeth clean.

Same here. No plaque at all on our dog from chewing appropriate raw bone and chews (e.g. antlers). We also feed a balanced raw diet which keeps the teeth sparkling white.

At the age of 4, Vet said Maggie needed a cleaning......
We started brushing her teeth each night (non-human toothpaste) and she gets a 'breath buster' biscuit each morning.
She's now 11......clean teeth and breath........now if I could just find something for her back end

Gosh, I was tickled with Dennis's response because it sounded so easy....until I read fordsooperdooty's review of Plak attack.

I am curious to know if dogs let you know if they have abscesses etc. toothaches??? Both our dogs see the vet regularly and he checks their teeth. Also they get groomed every 5-6 weeks and they get their teeth cleaned. Still have bad breath.

Appreciate all the input thanks!

Sometimes they do, but not always. Odor is the first clue, not just bad breath. Some will have decreased appetite and stop chewing on normaal items.

Many times we identify abscesses when they cause swelling and/or they rupture. The most commonly abscessed tooth in the dog is the upper 4th premolar (the carnasial tooth)- the great big tooth towards the back of the mouth. It results in swelling below the eye on the same side and will often open up and drain.

our chihuahua has breath that could kill, lol
Have had his teeth checked every year and he says there are no problems.
Is there anything else that causes bad breath besides teeth?

It can be what you feed your pets.

Mine chews rawhide all the time so his teeth are healthy and clean. I feed him Greenies now and then but he really don't need them.

Bonnie loves a treat by Natural Choice called Crunchy Treats with real apple. they even smell like apples and they make his breath smell good too. They also claim to clean teeth and freshen breath.

I have noticed when I give him the meaty treats or the chicken treats his breath is awful. Haven't had that problem since I changed to the apple treats.

That said, my dog loves fruit but he don't care for veggies so I drag a carrot across the floor so he will chase it and bite it. He ends up eating most of it.
