We have both -- but tend to use the exterior one which keeps the heat outside -- well use the inside one if it's raining/dark etc.

I have three kinds:

1. Foil bubble wrap to cover all cab windows from inside. Windshield cover is a purchased pleated shade and I made the side window covers myself (roll of Reflectix, pattern made by taping newspaper over window, cut the foil a bit larger and just press into window area when using - it holds itself in and has lasted well for hundreds of uses). This provides privacy and keeps people and bears from seeing the stuff I have in the cab.

2. Exterior vinyl window cover, purchased. I don't use this. It gets wet, gets dirty, might damage paint or wipers.

3. Pleated curtain between coach and cab, came with the vehicle. Provides privacy and some temperature control, keeps me from having to see whatever I have in the cab.

As I mentioned, weather can be an issue in deploying the outside windshield cover and I have foregone it, or removed it, in extremely high winds or if it's wet upon arrival. I don't think it would be a good idea to install it with water trapped between it and the windows.

Sometimes if arriving at a campsite late at night, or in bad weather, I'll use the inside curtain till morning when I fully set up camp. I'm sure most of us have had those stormy nights when we pulled in, checked the level on the fridge, said "Close enough", and waited till morning to finish setting up camp.

Another thing to be careful of, the magnets can pick up pyrites, other small ferrous metal particles, and even micro meteorites from blowing dust or if dragged along the ground. You need to clean them off lest they have the propensity to scratch your paint.

I've been using our current exterior cover, most of the time, for four years and have never had it damage the paint or wipers as has been mentioned.

I have the inside curtain, but I also made one from foil bubble wrap that blocks all cab windows. I don't like the ones outside for safety reasons. If I run into trouble makers I don't have to get outside my vehical and can make a fast get away if need be.

We have 3.

Inside we hang for quick cover or when setting forward often. It lets in far to much heat or cold so nice for times when you are not really closed up but just want some cover.

Reflecting inside the glass we use for short stops when facing the sun.

And Out side.

We use the out side most. Does the best all around job.

I have an inside curtain, a windshield shade, and an exterior "snooze bonnet." Together, they keep the motor home warmer or cooler and block the light.

We have never used the outside cover while camping, only for storage. We use those foldable spring windshield covers, two sets, one for the windshield and one for each side window at night. We often take them down during the day, at least the side ones. We have a reflectix curtain to close off the cab when it is cold.
When leaving the RV we always lock the house door from inside and exit out the cab doors. The door has an extra security lock inside that does not have a key outside. Maybe I should rethink this routine though.

Most of our stops are overnighters, and we seldom bother with the interior velcro-mounted curtain. I usually put a foil covered cardboard thingy on the dash behind the windshield.
I've never noticed people trying to peek inside and don't worry about privacy.

Having used 'external' covers previously on vehicles parked outside in the winter. I don't go there. It's just more of a mess than I need to deal with intentionally.

The MH came with a curtain behind the Cab seating. It attaches with Hook an Loop fasteners. We've replace it with heavier curtain material the is insulated and DW likes better.

Have interior Reflectex folding windshield screen to help with the 'thermal' aspects of life.

Our only concession to exterior coverage is for storage in the winter. MH gets a full cover in the winter time.
