Back in the DOS days, I used X-Tree, then in all previous versions of Windows, there was always a Windows Explorer, or something, to find & sort files. I don't find that in Win 7.

I have about 250,000 personal data files (about 150,000 pictures) that I keep on an external drive (clone backed-up of course). Most of the pictures are in folders with the date that the pix was taken.

What does Win 7 have that will allow me to search all drives for an individual file OR by extension for an unnamed file?

Start, All Programs, Accessories, Windows Explorer. Or, just use Start, Computer.

For the pictures, you should download Picasa, a free picture organize tool with limited picture editing capabilities:

Even if that would work for the pictures (which it really won't) what do I do for the other 100,000+ files???

This is the same problem I am having, and I think I asked this same question here yesterday. I am so use to having a file tree to work from in XP, I could grab files or folders from one part of the tree and drag them to another...I cant figure out how to do it in Win7

Go to start, chooseComputer. you will see all attached drives. click on the drive you want to use. You have been told about Picaso and there is a resident MS application called Media player that will also sort pictures.

If you're searching for a specific file/file extension then use the Search function. It is fairly quick, more so if you've allowed the Index service to run. It isn't as fast or efficient (so I've been led to understand) as Google Desktop or others of the ilk but it does a fair job.

I use Total Commander Beta 64 & Total Commander

One of these are on every machine I operate.

I'm an extremely satisfied user only!
