I have an 06 crewcab duramax/allison 4x4 with 58,000 miles on it, it was bought in Aug. 05 so it is now 6 years old with an average of only 10,000 miles per year, while driving today my check engine light came on, the first thing i checked was that the gas cap was on tight and it was, next i filled the gas tank up according to the owners manuel that it is possible to get air in the line. the only thing that i have done to the truck truck was to replace the 26 gallon tank with a 45 gallon tank and put a S&b airfilter on it. So i stumped as why the check engine light is on, it is set to go into the shop on tuesday unless i can figure it out, at $125 an hour at the dealer it could get expensive, any suggestions would be welcome.

I would suspect a bad glow plug. I have had that happen twice.

A glow plug will be out of the loop while driving. Won't be that. Go to an Advance Auto Parts, they will read your codes free of charge. Don't guess at this stuff, it can cost you a fortune. A decent code reader is fairly inexpensive, although one that can read diesel codes might be more be more.

Why don't you just got to an autoparts store and have them read the code.

Get the codes read at Auto Zone or similar store. Most are free.
First guess would be fuel filter needs replacement. If your aftermarket filter is a oil type. MAP may need cleaning. Fuel caps have been known to cause problems. Causing a vacuum in tank.
If filter has been replaced could be a bad seal.
Lots of minor things can cause the CEL. Until you get the Codes read I and other are only guessing.
When you get the codes look up what they mean here. DTC code look up.
You can also use the Diesel Place Search feature to find out how to repair your truck.

I agree, go get it scanned, that way you'll look like you know what your talking about when it goes in the shop. They tend to be careful
scamming folks like that. I just had mine in the dealer, and the service writer gave me a funny look when I had my fuel pressure gauge, and scanner on the passengers seat, he asked me what I found so far. I told him no codes, and still 11psi from the pump in my tank when it stalls, so the tech can take it from their, I don't have a rail gauge.

Could be anything. Is your air filter the washable/re-oil type? Fouled MAF sensor maybe?

For just over the price of one hours' labor at the dealer, you could buy a Scangauge2 and be able to scan the codes from any OBD2 vehicle yourself (anything newer than 1996), but it also functions as a full set of digital gauges too. Scangauge2 website

I suspect that your problem maybe your gas cap and gas tank. Since you have a diesel, you should not have a gas cap or gas tank.

Diesel fuel and gasoline are different fuels and your really should have a fuel filler cap and a fuel tank. Any reference to gasoline with your diesel will cause the check engine light to illuminate immediately.

Glow plug failure has a separate indicator. If one goes bad it looks like a coil spring next to the CEL light.

Agree.
Bad low plug would first be indicated by a WTS (coil spring) staying on out and then the CEL staying on.

This would indicate a bad plug and or a bad glow plug control module.
