We have a portable Directv dish as well as a King Dome for times when obstructions block the signal to the roof mounted one. We carry 100 ft. of coax so we can locate the portable wherever needed.

I have the DirecTV Slimline dish so I can watch HD. I use a tripod for setup. Setup usually takes me less than 10 minutes. You get pretty good at it after a while.

Are you asking if folks use DirecTV, or if they set the antenna up inside their RV?
DirecTV is definitely "line of site" between the dish and the satellite....and anything (tree limbs, thick clouds, and especially RVs) will block that signal, so if you want to keep the dish indoors, it's not going to work.

As to folks using DirecTV for television....yes, lots of them do....probably a majority.
I had DirecTV for a little over 2-years (that was their agreement period), and dropped it as quick as I could. I was paying about $55/month, and in that two years, probably watched a total of about 10 hours of TV in the RV. Pretty expensive, and we decided it was much cheaper to bring along some DVDs to watch or play board games on those rainy days we're trapped in the RV.

Now, it's different for those folks who also have DirecTV at their homes, and who are able to take the "box" from their Den or bedroom, and bring it along with them in the RV....and that is what most do. They buy an extra dish for the RV, and just hook up the box when they go camping.
We have cable at home, so only had the DirecTV in the RV...and it was just to expensive, and couldn't be justified.

Happy Camping

As previously indicated, it's easy to install a dish on the roof of your RV and simply take a satellite box from the house when you go on the road. We live in Verizon country and they're trying very hard to get us to switch to FIOS TV. Every time they call or show up on the doorstep I ask them, "Does FIOS come with a two hundred mile extension cord?"

We've been with DirecTV since the beginning - Even before they offered local channels. We like it and we're sticking with it.

If you install a dish on the roof of a B, you'll probably have to be out of the shade to watch TV. And the antenna housing dome is kinda large, at least on some systems; looks kind of overwhelming on the roof of a B.

Winegard used to make an exposed manual crank-up dish for roof mounting. I have no idea if they still do, how much hassle it is to use, or how well it works.

I have the impression that some folks carry a loose dish and tripod, and set it up in the CG.

We have been looking at the Wineguard "briefcase" model, as if we put one on the roof, we don't fit through the garage door anymore, and the shade issue. They are manual aiming, but much smaller than the auto aiming one. Anyone using one of them.

Unless the discussion is restricted to the particular issues of dealing with a B, this topic belongs to the Technology Corner forum.
