I need to mount some solar panels on the roof(rubber) of my motor coach. What is the best way to reduce problems of water leaks, etc. Thanks folks.

I smothered the screws with rubber roof caulking.

Some people mount them on the AC shroud to avoid more screws in the rubber roof, then run the wires down through the roof vent.

With my old RV (EPDM roof) I used butyl tape/putty underneath the bracket and dicor lap sealant over the top of the bracket.

Hi,

I made my own solar panel mounts with 2" aluminum angle from Home Depot, 6" long with 3 holes 3/16" for the roof side and a 5/16" hole to mount the panel with a 1/4-20 bolt.

Under the bracket, I put down a thick layer of rubber roof sealant, and on top of the screws more sealant. This worked well for about 8 years, then I coated the whole roof with Herculiner white bedliner.

For tilt arms I used 3/4" angle aluminum, thinner metal, about 18" long for the longer panels and 10" long for the shorter panels.

I also used 1/4-20 tamper resistant bolts, that require a special key to loosen the bolts. It is a torx with a reject button in the center.

Fred.
