Houseboating on Shasta is phenominal. It is a huge lake with thousands of places to beach. As for RV's I haven't found a great place close to the water but there are plenty of good rv parks. You just have to walk or drive to the water.

Eagle Lake is pretty windy and more high desert. Shasta is more mountains like. Both are nice.

We had a great time at Eagle Lake. It apperaed full but there is a CG near the north west corner that was only 20% full. I don't think they have houseboats tho. Lakes in California are quite full due to last years rains. Lots of places to houseboat here: Shasta, Oroville, New Melones, Don Pedro, McClure and even the Delta.

Seems to me that Antlers Campground was right by a launch ramp on the northern end of the Sacramento River. The year we were there it was a drought year, and the end of the ramp was waaaaay above the water, unusable. I think this year is better.
Eagle Lake has Eagle Lake trout. Worth a look.

We stayed at the Merrill campground at Eagle Lake last October. Merrill looked like a brand new campground. The camp sites are huge and most of them can handle any size motor home. Our neighbors had a 40' class A and three automobiles on their site. The terrain was mostly flat and it was an easy walk to the beach and lake. However, the wind blows a lot and you need a good sized boat if you plan to be on the lake during the day.
We have also stayed at the Antlers RV park on the north end of Shasta Lake many times. Nearly all of the sites have full hookups. The upper loop (sites 73 through 115) has a lot of shade and the sites are big. The lower loop (near the pool and store) are very small and close together with limited shade. Shade can be important at Shasta because we've seen temps of 102 in early May there. It's about a 50 yard walk down a steep boat ramp to get to the boat docks and the GIANT house boats. Going down is easy, but coming back up can wear you out. We've had deer come into our camp site during the day time and eat slices of bread out of our hand. At night there was a small bear that would come through camp and dig through the garbage cans, but never bothered people. The big disadvantage for most of the camp grounds and RV parks at the north end of the lake are the trains. The main tracks going from California to Oregon and Washington go right past most of the camp grounds. It's not just Antlers RV park, it's ALL or MOST of the RV parks in that area. If you are taking your own boat you'll have two options for launching it at Atlers. There is a public boat ramp just off of I-5 on the road to Antlers RV park. The price to launch was $5.00 the last time we were there. Or you can have the guys at Antlers launch the boat for you. The last time we were there they were charging $25.00 and you DO NOT have the option of launching it yourself on their ramp. You can also rent a berth at the Antlers dock for your boat if you plan to stay a few days. By the way, the campgrounds have restrooms with flushing toilets and hot showers. You can see a map of the Antlers campground here: http://www.antlersrvpark.com/887181.html
If you are looking to rent a houseboat I don't think you will find any on Eagle Lake. There are several places to rent them on Shasta Lake. Antlers has small ones that are nothing but a big piece of plywood (8' x 16') on pontoons with a BBQ and a toilet for day use up to their big one, the Orion. The Orion is 56 feet long, sleeps 19 and had two full bathrooms. It was awesome, but I don't think we'll be renting it since we have our motor home and 15' fishing boat.

To some it's a six pack, to me it's a support group.

We Prefer Bullards Bar for House Boating over the more popular lakes just fewer people and more prestine setting.
