On the last day of the trip I empty the holding tanks (in the proper place) and open the drain on the fresh tank. That way everything is empty when we get home. Forgot. I drain the water heater, too.

After we get done camping, then dumping, I pull the plug before I step back in the truck and let her drain on the way home.

That is not entirely true... it all depends on the chlorine residual of the water. If you are under 3 ppm of chlorine it would still be considered drinking water. Above that requires the water to be de-chlorinated before disposal. Bleach is only a 3% chlorine solution so it is entirely possible to use bleach and still have a low residual. Pool chlorine and water district chlorine is usually a 12-15% solution which would bring a higher residual.

I opened my fresh drain about 50 miles from home. I generally always keep it full during the season. I had been out awhile and I wanted to drain the CG water I had filled up with out of the tank. In wanted to refill at home with my known source of chlorinated city water.
A well intentioned passing motorist flagged me over thinking I had a major leak issue. I was not aware of what the motorist was pointing at me about so I pulled over on 95 just south of DC. Not the greatest place to be on the side of the road.
I was relieved to find that the motorist was trying to alert me that I was draining my fresh water tank.

To pump out out pool, (in CA) we have to let the chlorine level drop to 0, then we dump it down the gutter, If I want to dump water with chlorine in it, I have to dump it down the sewer.
Here in my town in AZ, we must get a free permit from the city before dumping in the gutter =or= our sewer clean-out. Since we have "retention basins" instead of surface run-off, any chlorine evaporates well before it even percolates into the ground, if we choose the gutter method. FWIW, I usually dump my fresh water in the forest on our annual family boondock campout. I'd do the grey without a thought, too, if I had to; our forests can use the water, and a few extra nutrients won't hurt anything. :-)

Terryallan wrote: You know the WORST thing that can happen, is for it to rain. You know all that WATER gets on the road, and grass and runs into the drains, or soaks into the ground. It's really a horrible thing.
Of course the worst thing about it. It carries all that stuff to the East Coast from the West, and kills our trees, and ruins the paint on our cars.
Did y'all know that. When used in a sentence. Is automatically censored on this forum? I didn't. Of all the words to censor. It seems like such a tame one
From your post a person would think that NC is the only place in the United States that the water drains into. We have the Rockies in the center of the US that precludes the water dumped here in California from migrating over to the East Coast. So the Water dumped on the west, as you say, does not wind up in NC. Also I have no problem dumping my water from my freshwater tank on the road or my grass. The grass is still green, even when I sanitize.

I always open the valve before getting back to the seasonal site, I LOVE that look on people's faces when they are sitting beside a trailer that's leaking "something"..... it might as well be toxic waste by the way their eyes look. No one ever asks though, they just carry on their way with a look of absolute panic.

Come on down to Rosemont, IL.....in a restaurant when they bring the water to your table you can 'smell' the chlorine as they are pouring it!
