We are thinking of taking highway 160 from Walsenburg Colorado through Alamosa and Pagosa Springs to the Durango & Cortez areas somewhere around October 20th. Will be driving a 33' Motor Home towing a Jeep Wrangler. Wondered if anyone has any thoughts on that route. Also interested in Boondocking spots, RV Parks, State Parks, etc to use as a home base for day trips. We are THE BAYFIELD BUNCH

Watch your speed on the downhill section of Wolf Creek Pass heading west.
Wolf Creek Pass has 6% to 8% grades, and just below this sign are several hairpin curves. Not that you need to go that speed, but one can come upon a truck doing <15 MPH and there's no passing. One can really need to lock up the brakes if not attentive to the speed of the vehicles in front of you. Otherwise, it's just like a lot of other high passes in CO.

We made the reverse trip in June from Durango to Walsenburg and on to Colorado Springs in a 35 foot class A towing a Suzuki Grand Vatara. You shouldn't have any problems, just watch the downhill sections. Slow down and enjoy the view, which is beautiful. Have a safe trip.

We go to that area ever summer, including this last summer. US 160 is a virtual RV pipeline. RVs of all sizes and types go both ways all day. Wolf Creek Pass is not bad going up east to west. Much steeper on the west side. Just take your time going down and you will have no problem.
The highway over the pass is very good. Two lanes going up/one down the east side. Two lanes going up the west side and two down most of the way, dropping down to one lane down as you near the bottom.
The road is much better than the picture above appears to show. In fact, I don't remember seeing that sign on numerous trips both ways over the pass. And I think the speed limits is greater than shown there, although it is lower for trucks than cars. Maybe an old sign. You can look at google maps street view and see that it is very good road.

Just watch the truckers and you will be fine. It has great views of everything along the way. Enjoy it's a great tour of that region without going off the highway.

I believe that picture was taken during the road construction a few years ago. The sign was still there a couple of years ago. In fact, I think there are a couple of them. Sign in google maps (I always pay attention to the signs even those just for trucks to see what they may be required to do down the road.) At 8%, I believe Wolf Creek Pass is the steepest grade on a US badged highway in Colorado. Not that thousands of RV's don't take it ever year -- just a warning to watch your speed.

We did that trip last year the first week of October and the roads were excellent. Just watch your speed on Wolf Creek Pass. By October 20th you should check the weather before you head west from walsenburg, there may be some snow. Also, all of the National forest campgrounds will be closed for the season by Oct. 20th as well as quite a few of the private parks. You may want to move your trip up a couple of weeks.
