Has anyone removed the generator from from underneath a 1996 PW?
Is it hard?
My gen stopped running while exercising with the AC on.
Tried starting it but would only turn over.
Today it started okay but wouldn;t supply any 120V and then it quit after a few minutes.
Gas tank is full & oil level is okay. Hoping to remove it & take to an ONAN shop.
Any suggestions or tips? Thanks
\steve

I haven't had the pleasure, and I'm assuming you've tried all remedies with it in place.... If it's underhung using the same Onan 'genuine parts kit' as the Roadtreks:

(You may want to lift the van slightly. Driving onto a two-high stack of 2x8's should be enough for a Dodge. You'll want a rolling floor jack and a helper.)

1. Undo fuel line, starter battery wire, remote start plug, and 120V connections. All on driver's side, near top, mostly front. See pic below.
Remove tailpipe.

2.Support generator (jack slightly off center, helper balancing on 'tother end.

3. Remove one bolt from Vee brace at front.

4. Remove two bolts from each side.

5. Lower jack. Side plates may take some slight prying.

This pic is the same unit, before my Tiger's coach was married to the chassis. Very different setup, but shows the connections.

From the forward side, connections going into the box are fuel, remote start, 12V for starter, 120 V.

I think that's everything. Note that I haven't actually done this, but I did figure it out long ago.

Good luck!

(on edit... if it's running with the start button released, it _is_ making 120 Volts. It would die when the start button is released otherwise. Have you check the master breaker on the Onan? It's a little toggle on the right side of the internal start panel (left side of access opening), nearly invisible.)

Stupid question, but is the van level and the fuel tank over 1/4% full or more?

Were it me, I'd certainly try an intermediate approach first.

Removing the unit and reinstalling it is a good deal of work, and must be done correctly. So, I'd first take the "rig" to a FULL SERVICE Cummins facility. We have one about 25 miles away and get my Onan parts from them.

You can find the nearest location to you here.

If it's something simple, then great, you avoided the removal/reinstall. If it's something more, you can discuss their charge with them.

Our local Cummins dealer, at least, always has RVs parked outside, so it would be nothing new to them.

It just might save you a lot of headache, heartache, and mistakes.

YMMV.

Cheers.

The Cummins Onan dealer/repair shop I went to for a warranty fuel pump replacement did all the dirty work including a drop of generator for the replacement pump. If you are mechanically inclined, more power to you to save a few pricey hours of labor charges. If not, consider letting them do it. Not the easiest job underneath.

Hope you can find the problem and a solution easier than a drop.

Before I went too far, I would try a couple of cans of SeaFoam in the gas tank to help the generator and then check to make sure the ATS is working to provide AC power. CGo to Progressive Dynamics website on how to check the ATS.

The same thing happened to me while exercising the generator. After running smooth for almost 2 hours the generator quit running. I tried to restart right away and nothing happened so i started to van engine and the generator would start but would quit as soon as i turned of the engine. I found that my battery terminals were coroded (cleaned not that long ago) The voltage of the battery was something like 10.3 I cleaned the terminals and restarted the gen after starting the vans engine. After about 5 minutes i shut off the vans engine and the generator kept running I rechecked voltage while gen was runing and got 14.25 Ran the gen for another hour and everyhing seems fine now. The battery probaly doesnt have much life left after running it so low. this might help might not

just an update, the gen started working fine until now. was running it 2 hours a month. yesterday it started okay and ran for a minute but quit just as it took the load, wouldn't start again; today it started right away and kept running while the van was plugged into 120v. soon as i unplugged the van in a minute the gen quit again.
will try and find a dealer and take it in for diagnosis,

Just a total guess.... ever cleaned the spark arrestor screen in the exhaust? My current 2.8 rather suddenly started choking and sputtering, then dying, under part load. Did over 2 hours worth of 'troubleshooting' (aka 'futzing around') before I thought to drop the exhaust and shine a small trouble light up into the internal muffler. Yep, that was it.
