I have Magnetek 6345 power convertor not charging the deep cycle battery which is brand new. The trailor is permanently parked in a campground and has all the original equipment so the 12 volt battery system is required to operate the refrigerator in 110V, the propane leak alarm, the radio and for other options.

Instead of purchasing a rebuild kit for the botton section of the converter that recharges the battery (for $200+) can I just disconnect the red positive wire between the convertor and the battery and use a 110V trickel charger to maintain the battery?

Thanks,

Lee

First, you can replace the whole piece of junk with a PD9245 for about $125. AND, the real advantage is if ya' get the Charge Wizard for it, the PD will treat your battery the way it should be treated.

Second, you're still gonna' have to reconnect the battery to the old 6245 to get 12V to your appliances---or rewire appliances w/fuses to the disconnected battery.

I'd be replacing the junk and getting it set up right.....depending on how much 12V you use, and how big a trickle charge you have, will determine whether it'll be enough.

Wow - That's a bit harsh - the Magnatek 6300 series were good converters in their time, but they had some shortcomings... They had a tendency to boil over the battery if the regulator was set to a to high a voltage... Other than that they were a decent converter - I had several RV's with that converter...

The answer to the OP's question is YES, you can use a regular battery charger to charge your batteries... It would be more convenient if you replaced the old Magnatek with a newer version, but that's your call...
