Hello! I am new to RVing, have a 1/2 ton TV and a 21ft TT and have what I am sure is a very simple question that I hope someone will answer for me. It has to do with the gear that I will be packing for the trip. I'm wondering if say, I have 500# of gear to pack, is it better to pack that gear in the TV or the TT (assuming that would be within the weight ratings), or to mix it up somewhat? By "better" I guess I mean which way is easier on both vehicles, and or will result in better performance and fuel efficiency. Thanks! See you on the road.

Assuming you have a weight-distributing hitch, putting as much of it in the TT as possible would be preferable.

Why is that?

Doesn't matter a whole lot. I pack it where I use it. If you use it with the TV, pack it in the TV. If you use it with the RV, pack it in the RV.

I guess the 100% right answer would be to go weigh your set-up (axle and tongue weights), then distribute your gear accordingly. Otherwise, as stated above, pack it where you use it.

Unless you are very close to your max or only have front or rear storage, 500#'s is not going to make a huge difference either way... As long as your hitch set up is correct, I agree pack it where you are going to use it.

I packed camping gear in TT where it was easy to access. In our MH I put like items together in the bays. Each of my bays has its own purpose and that way I don't have to look for things if needed.

Why is that?

If I may, I'd like to take a stab at that!

I agree with those that post, put it where you are going to use it. I also agree with kknowlton. 1/2 ton trucks are notorious for their limited PL capacity. Usually the TT will have the capacity to absorb pretty much what you need to take with you with a bit to spare. If you put it (your cargo) in your pick'em up truck, you could easily overload it pretty quickly, depending on the TT tongue weight.

Wisdom is the right use of knowledge. To know is not to be wise. Many men know much, and are all the greater fools for it. There is no fool so great a fool as a knowing fool. But to know how to use knowledge is to have wisdom.

Thanks everyone for your help. I figured it was a pretty simple question, but as my old math teacher used to say: "the only dumb question is one that goes unasked.
See you on the road!
