We were able to route a set of speaker wires down a wall into the storage compartment under our bunks. Once there, I wired in a volume knob and connected indoor/outdoor speakers (wired). When we arrive at our campsite, we open the storage door, set the speakers where we want them, set the outside volume to the level we want outside (independent of the inside volume).

The speaker wires are long enough to set them around our site... though mostly we just set them on the ground outside the door. The setup is not as neat and tidy as wireless, but we don't have to worry about AC power or batteries.

In this photo with the bunks removed (another project), you can see our speakers & volume knob setup...

The speakers' wires come out of the wall behind the speakers (see the wall plate behind the speakers). Then the wires run along the base of the wall into the double gang box near the door. This places the volume knob right inside the door. Previously, I had mounted it on the wall behind the speakers... it was a stretch to adjust.

Happy Camping!
John.

A different approach would be to use wifi to stream audio and/or video to the great outdoors.

We use a tiny Apple Express to connect to a second stereo in our stick house. Plenty of other devices could also feed a boombox, receiver or powered speakers.

We bring an iPod and/or a laptop on our camping trips as an easy way to bring a few hundred albums and podcasts with us.

I know this sounds like a techy solution.

Figured you'd just use a boombox if you wanted to hear a radio station.
