One of our cell phones is about to bite the dust. I would like to purchase a phone that would work with Verizon. However I don't want to buy it from Verizon because I don't want to extend our contract for two years, which they automatically do when you purchase from them. What is a good source to buy such a phone?

I purchased one on Ebay. They have lots of new ones there with no contract required

There are several sellers that sell new cellphones on eBay 
I finally got tired of Verizon  just recently and went to a Tracphone. For the amount that I was paying monthly for a cellphone to use in emergencies, over $70.00 a month.   I bought 2 brand new cell phones with 1400 minutes and a years service for what 2 months cost me,@ Verizon.

Also Craigslist. Check out the prices on Ebay, then look on CL. Good things about CL is you can hold it and try it before you buy it and you don't pay shipping. I always meet my CL buyer/seller at a neutral place, like a McDonalds.

eBay and be sure to purchase a Square Trade Warranty. bought a used cell with a 2-yr warranty. the phone died 15-months later, i filed a claim and got 100% of the cost back (not including shipping).

I DOUBT if even Verizon would require an extended contract if you pay full price for the phone instead of take one of their reductions or free models.

Locally there is a place where you can buy used cell phones with no contracts. Might be one or two models old, but if all you want is a basic phone it might be a good deal.

That's not quite true. The two year contract is required with a free phone or highly discounted upgraded model. You pay the retail price and you want have to extend your contract. If my memory serves me correctly, you must use a Verizon programmed model to continue with Verizon.
