I have a 60 watt panel that I want to use just to maintain by batteries. I know I also need to buy a controller and will get one soon.
My question is, does the panel need to be isolated (disconnected) from the batteries when there is no sun? Will the panel use battery power after dark if it's left connected?

Only without a controller or a diode

Any decent controller will shut down and prevent "backfeed" once the sun is obscured.

Solar controller or diode also protects the pannel when hooked to shore power from feedback.

Are there even any panels these days that don't have diodes? I didn't come accross any when I was shopping for mine.

I don't know of any panels made in the last several years that wouldn't have diodes built in. I don't think you need to worry about that. I would get a controller soon and that will take care of it for sure.

Hi java,

If the battery bank is large you may only need to add a diode, or a diode and switch if you so wish.
