I saw the Honda chart, and that 68db was between normal speech and a vaccuum cleaner and thought that wasn't bad. However, I have read several comments on other sites that 68db was obnoxiously loud. I, when running the generator I borrowed from my dad, didn't really notice it was obnoxiously loud. I see on pg 47 of the current Highways issue, the Champion brand, the 4000 watt is 68db.

The point was, your generator sounded far more like a vacuum cleaner than normal conversation. There's a time and place for everything. Please use common sense and discretion.

68 db would be too noisy for me. Our Yamaha 3000se is rated 53db - 60db and when it kicks into high revs it bothers me. One thing to remember is that these ratings are taken from 7 meters or 21 feet away. How loud is it right next to the genny? Boondocking by yourself where there is lots of space to move the genny away from you might work but right next to your camper will probably get old pretty fast.

I think it's way too loud. It's not so much that you'll be ticking off the other campers (which you will), but what will happen is that everything you start the generator, you'll feel defensive; like you're looking over your shoulder at how the other sites are viewing you. It's just not the right thing to do.

Here's a thought... Just imagine the people next to you vacuuming outside their camper for hours on end.

We boondock alot and we habe a built-in Onan generator...many people gripe about this and that about generators but if I am set up in a spot and you choose to park near me or next to me I reserve the right to run my generator when I want and for whatever reason I want...

But, what if you have the opposite occur. You're set up in a nice quiet spot and some folks pull in beside you and fire up their generator for the next three days? We've had this happen a few times.

I think you’re probably starting to get the picture. In an RV Park or heavily developed cg with a lot of big rigs it can sound like a truck stop at times and the noise is less noticeable. Even there loud generators aren’t appreciated, though. As you go up the scale to more rustic cg’s generators are increasingly disliked. In a cg with “campers” there for the outdoor experience even the quiet Hondas are only tolerated for a limited time and a loud generator is almost sure to get a hostile reaction. If you boondock with no one around you for quite a long distance you only disturb yourself.

I have a champion 3500/4000 genset and live in the country. I had it running today to run the AC on the camper. I have very few neighbors and all is mostly quiet out here except when everyone is mowing yards.I like this genset however I really dont think I would drag it into a populated campground and not expect some complaints. My hearing is slowly fading and I try to use hearing protection when doing yard work, and at the least, this champion genset is annoying. I am trying to come up with a "box" of some sort to try and quiet it down.

Sounds fine to me…

To me its more important how and when you use it…

How often you use it might have some bearing on the value of spending mega bucks for one that is quieter…

Some (see note 1) 0f the rudest and most inconsiderate campers I have run across were also quiet Honda owners… for some (see note 1) it seems buying a Honda ensures your right to say I am a better camper than you are…
It must be written in the manual or something…

so again its not the generator but how you use it that matters to me the most…

@ JJBIRISH. I agree with you. I do not run this thing for hours on end. I only run it when needed, maybe totaling a few hours during the day (between 8am and 9pm). I try to be as considerate as possible, as I would like others to do the same.

I have 2 Yamaha EF2000's that I run in parallel only when I need the AC, which is not that often. Honestly, I mainly use them in parallel when we tailgate college football games and MAYBE when my son and I go boondocking- and I mean in the middle of nowhere with nobody around us at all. When we camp in the summer, 99.9% of the time we are at a pedestal somewhere. If I take my son boondocking in the mountains, I just take one of them.

As far as noise goes, I purposefully seek out spots (usually from word of mouth and plenty of research) that I know there will not be hardly anyone around. This involves picking the right time of year and location, of course. This way, when I do run the Yamaha(s), I don't disturb anyone. I just don't camp at Natl parks anymore. Only state parks and the middle of nowhere for me.

The human ear is VERY subjective, so what sounds quiet to you may not be so to another. But common sense and courtesy left us eons ago (and I'm 36!). Camping to me, is still a primitive experience when I can make it that way. In fact, I'd still be tent camping if the wife wasn't so bent on an RV.

My dad has a fishing spot that he's fished for years, and he still won't tell me where it is. He did blindfold me once and took me up there though. Best flyfishing I have ever experienced. I'm just about the same way with my camping spots. They are QUIET, and well kept secrets to most.
